
ITVX Turns Two: Is It Still the Future of ITV or Has the Shine Worn Off?
ITVX, ITV’s streaming service, is celebrating its second anniversary this December, but there are growing concerns about its future. While the platform initially generated excitement as ITV’s digital pivot in the face of declining traditional TV viewership, recent reports suggest that the shine may be fading. Internal tensions and cost-cutting measures are raising questions about ITVX’s long-term viability as the UK’s premier streaming service.
Launched in December 2022, ITVX promised to revolutionize ITV’s digital strategy by offering on-demand streaming, exclusive shows, and a free, ad-supported model. Initially, it looked like ITV was on the right track. The platform quickly attracted millions of users, becoming a cornerstone in the UK’s streaming landscape. However, two years on, the situation seems less certain. According to recent reports from The Sunday Times, ITV insiders have expressed frustration with the platform’s direction. There’s a growing sense that ITVX, rather than being a shiny new success story, has been caught up in internal cost-cutting measures that have left it struggling to maintain momentum.
A key issue highlighted by these reports is the surprise cost reductions that followed ITVX’s launch. Many of the senior staff who were instrumental in creating ITVX have since left, and the service has been hit with significant budget cuts. ITV had hoped that ITVX would be the future of the network, gradually replacing traditional TV. However, rather than focusing on growing its streaming service, ITV executives shifted attention back to its linear TV channels, further complicating ITVX’s development.

Part of the problem lies in ITVX’s reliance on advertising revenue. In 2024, ITVX absorbed BritBox UK’s content library, but instead of expanding its premium subscription service, ITV focused on maximizing ad-supported options. This shift was a gamble, especially as global streaming giants like Netflix and Disney+ push further into ad-supported models. ITV’s approach could prove challenging, given that many competitors have much larger content libraries and resources to invest in exclusive content.
ITVX also faces technical challenges. While it initially replaced the problematic ITV Hub, viewers are still reporting bugs and issues, undermining its credibility as a reliable streaming platform. Additionally, regional live-streaming features, which are standard on other platforms, remain limited, and only a handful of ITV’s regional channels are available on the service.
Despite these issues, ITVX is still a major player in the streaming space. The platform continues to attract large numbers of viewers, especially for hit shows like Love Island and I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out of Here! These shows have consistently topped ITVX’s streaming charts, but it remains to be seen whether these audience numbers are enough to sustain ITVX in the long term.
