Jets Dash Blackhawks’ Hopes in Sorensen’s Coaching Debut
The Winnipeg Jets spoiled Anders Sorensen's first game as interim coach for the Chicago Blackhawks with a 4-2 victory at the United Center on Saturday night. The Jets showcased resilience and firepower, becoming the first team this season to reach 20 wins while handing Chicago its fifth consecutive loss.
The night started with hope for the Blackhawks as Alex Vlasic capitalized on a power play, putting them ahead 1-0 with a blistering slap shot from the high slot at 9:01 of the first period. Supported by screens from Ryan Donato and Tyler Bertuzzi, the goal set an optimistic tone for Sorensen's debut. However, the Jets responded quickly. Gabriel Vilardi tied the game at 13:31 by redirecting a Logan Stanley shot past Chicago’s Arvid Soderblom, who stepped in after Petr Mrazek suffered an apparent injury just ten minutes into the game.

Alec Martinez reignited the Blackhawks’ momentum with a stunning wrist shot late in the first period, bringing the score to 2-1. Tragically for Chicago, Martinez later exited the game after being struck in the face by a deflected shot in the third period. Despite their early lead and flashes of brilliance, the Blackhawks struggled to maintain control as the Jets increased their pressure.
Nino Niederreiter equalized for the Jets midway through the second period with a sharp backhanded goal from a tight angle. This set the stage for Mark Scheifele’s pivotal moment in the third period. Scheifele capitalized on a rebound from a Kyle Connor shot at 10:18, breaking the tie and securing Winnipeg’s advantage. The Jets sealed the deal with an empty-net goal by Mason Appleton at 18:19.
Chicago’s goaltending challenges were evident throughout the night. Soderblom, stepping in under difficult circumstances, made 21 saves but couldn’t stop Winnipeg’s relentless attack. Meanwhile, Connor Hellebuyck of the Jets had a quieter night, making just 12 saves but holding steady when it mattered most.
While Sorensen’s debut didn’t yield the hoped-for results, it highlighted areas the Blackhawks must address as they navigate a challenging season. For the Jets, their 20th win underscores their status as a formidable force in the league.
