Justin Schultz Announces Retirement After Decorated Hockey Career
Veteran defenseman Justin Schultz has officially retired from professional hockey, ending a remarkable career that spanned over a decade and brought him to the pinnacle of the sport. The 34-year-old, known for his skill and contributions on both ends of the ice, announced his decision following a brief stint with HC Lugano in Switzerland.
Schultz joined Lugano in October 2024, recording six assists in just eight games. In a heartfelt statement, he explained that his decision was a deeply personal one. "After discussions with my family, I’ve decided to retire and return to Canada," Schultz shared. "I thank Hockey Club Lugano for their professionalism and respect for my decision. I wish the club and team success in the future."

Drafted 43rd overall by the Anaheim Ducks in 2008, Schultz made his NHL debut with the Edmonton Oilers in 2012. He quickly established himself as a reliable puck-moving defenseman, amassing 71 goals and 324 points in 745 regular-season games across stints with Edmonton, Pittsburgh, Washington, and Seattle. Schultz was instrumental in the Pittsburgh Penguins' back-to-back Stanley Cup victories in 2016 and 2017, cementing his legacy as a champion.
After his contract with the Seattle Kraken expired in 2023, Schultz explored options but was unable to secure another NHL deal. His move to Switzerland demonstrated his enduring passion for the game, but ultimately, his priorities shifted toward family and life beyond hockey.
In addition to his regular-season success, Schultz contributed significantly in the playoffs, tallying 42 points in 81 games. His on-ice vision and ability to quarterback the power play made him an asset throughout his career.
