Kevin Sinfield's Incredible Challenge to Raise Awareness for MND

Kevin Sinfield, a former England rugby league star, has embarked on an extraordinary journey to raise awareness and funds for motor neurone disease (MND) charities. This marks the start of his second ultramarathon in his ongoing campaign to honor his late teammate, Rob Burrow, who passed away from MND earlier this year.

Sinfield, 44, is tackling a grueling series of seven ultramarathons, running a total of 370 kilometers (230 miles) over seven days, covering the distance from Gloucester to Bristol. His mission is deeply personal, driven by the tragic loss of his close friend Rob Burrow, who was diagnosed with the disease in 2019 and passed away at just 41 years old. Burrow’s courageous fight against MND had inspired a national movement, and Sinfield, who has raised millions for MND research over the years, is continuing that fight with determination.

The challenge began at Gloucester’s Kingsholm Stadium and will take him through various checkpoints, including Slimbridge AFC and the Memorial Stadium in Bristol, before reaching Ashton Gate, home to Bristol City and Bristol Bears. Along the route, Sinfield is being supported by a wide array of MND sufferers, former professional athletes, and other supporters who are committed to raising awareness for the devastating condition. Sinfield has already raised almost £10 million in previous fundraising efforts, and this year, he is aiming to raise an additional £777,777 – a nod to Rob Burrow’s famous shirt number, 7.

In an emotional moment at the start of the run, Sinfield acknowledged the incredible support from the MND community. “To see that support on the road for MND families across the country is really special. We take energy from it, and we can't thank people enough,” he said. He also shared how the journey brings him closer to his friends and inspirations, including former professional footballer Marcus Stewart and cricketer Syd Lawrence, both of whom are battling MND themselves.

This isn’t Sinfield’s first attempt to raise awareness for MND, as he has previously completed similar ultra-endurance challenges. His unwavering commitment to supporting MND research is a testament to the love and friendship he shared with Rob Burrow, and his mission continues to inspire thousands.

The ‘7 in 7’ challenge serves as a tribute to Burrow’s legacy, with Sinfield sharing, “We’ve lost a great man, but he’d want us to smile, push forward, and do this justice.” The incredible support he has received along the way demonstrates the strength of the MND community and the impact Sinfield’s efforts are having on raising both awareness and critical funds for MND research. This journey is a powerful reminder of the importance of continuing to fight for a cure for this cruel disease.
