Lazio's January Transfer Plans: Casadei, Bondo, and the Midfield Reinforcements
Lazio's January transfer window strategy is becoming clearer, as manager Maurizio Sarri looks to reinforce his squad, particularly in the midfield. The club is keen on finding a versatile and young midfielder who can add depth and flexibility to the team. With Sarri's tactical approach demanding a solid midfield, the club has already begun evaluating potential targets, aiming to strengthen an area that has been a challenge throughout the season.
One of the primary reasons for Lazio's search for reinforcements is the limited options in midfield. The team has often struggled with short rotations, forcing Sarri to stick to a 4-2-3-1 formation rather than experimenting with a three-man midfield, a system he prefers when all players are available. The current midfielders—Gaetano Castrovilli, who has struggled with injuries, and MatÃas Vecino, who has had his own fitness concerns—have not offered the consistency required for a top Serie A side. Given Vecino’s age and injury history, and Castrovilli’s continued fitness issues, Lazio is considering moving forward with a new acquisition.

The club is reportedly looking for a player who can provide more options in the middle of the park and is adaptable enough to play in various midfield roles. Cesare Casadei, currently at Chelsea, has emerged as a potential target. Casadei, an Italian talent who has not seen much playing time with the Blues, is expected to be loaned out this January. Lazio sees him as a valuable addition—his ability to play across the midfield and his youth make him an attractive and cost-effective option. There's also the possibility of negotiating a buy option if Casadei impresses during his loan spell.
Another name on Lazio’s radar is Ibrahim Bondo, currently playing at Monza. The club is interested in the young midfielder, and a potential deal could be facilitated through the ongoing relationship between the two clubs. Monza is reportedly pushing for a move involving Bondo, which could lead to Lazio making an offer, especially if they can secure a good deal for a player with significant potential. These types of low-cost operations are a priority for Lazio, as they are trying to avoid disrupting their summer transfer plans while still strengthening the squad in the immediate term.
On the international front, Lazio is also monitoring potential signings abroad. One name that has caught their attention is 2005-born Atangana from Reims, a player who could add more depth to Lazio’s midfield. Atangana is considered one of the bright young talents in French football, and his connection with fellow U21 French player Tchaouna is also worth noting.
Despite these promising options, Lazio is aware of the challenges in securing a deal. The January window is notoriously unpredictable, and Sarri’s side will have to act quickly and decisively to secure the right reinforcements. However, with the club’s focus on building a strong and competitive squad for the remainder of the season, the acquisition of a new midfielder seems imminent. Whether Lazio will pull the trigger on these deals or explore other avenues remains to be seen, but the club is certainly prepared to make moves in order to continue their push for European qualification.
