Liverpool Edge Closer to Champions League Last 16 with Narrow Win Over Girona

Liverpool have taken a giant step toward securing their place in the last 16 of the UEFA Champions League after Mohamed Salah’s decisive penalty in a 1-0 win against Girona at the Municipal de Montilivi. The penalty, awarded after a VAR review for a foul on Luis Diaz, ensured the Reds remain perfect in the group stage, having won all six of their matches. This victory marked the second time in the club's illustrious history they’ve won their first six games in a European campaign.

Despite an unconvincing performance, Liverpool’s resilience proved too much for Girona, who created several chances but lacked the finishing touch to capitalise. The match, though far from vintage Liverpool, was one where Alisson’s return in goal played a key role. The Brazilian goalkeeper was instrumental in keeping his team in the game, making crucial saves to deny Bryan Gil and Arnaut Danjuma, particularly when his teammates were not firing on all cylinders.

The game saw a somewhat muted first half, with both teams failing to break the deadlock. Liverpool’s attacking players, including Darwin Nunez and Salah, couldn’t find their rhythm, and Girona’s defence, led by Donny van de Beek, held firm. However, it was a second-half moment of controversy that decided the game. A VAR review determined that Van de Beek had fouled Luis Diaz inside the box, giving Salah the chance to score. Despite missing from the penalty spot against Real Madrid recently, Salah kept his composure to fire past Paulo Gazzaniga, putting Liverpool 1-0 up.

With the win, Liverpool not only moved closer to qualification for the knockout stages but also cemented their position at the top of their group. Salah’s penalty also made him the joint leader in Champions League penalties for Liverpool, tying with Steven Gerrard. It was a landmark moment for the Egyptian, who now has 50 goals in Europe’s top club competition, surpassing the likes of Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Kylian Mbappe.

While Liverpool ultimately got the job done, they will know they can perform much better. Nunez continued to struggle in front of goal, missing a couple of good opportunities, and the Reds seemed laboured at times. However, the win allowed manager Arne Slot the luxury of rotating his squad for their remaining group-stage fixtures, with their passage to the knockout stages virtually assured.

Girona, meanwhile, face an uphill battle to progress after their fifth defeat in six matches. Though they showed quality in moments, their inability to finish chances leaves them with slim hopes of advancing further. Despite the defeat, Girona can take heart from their performance and their ability to challenge a top team like Liverpool.

With Alisson back in top form and Salah continuing to deliver, Liverpool’s European campaign is in excellent shape as they look to finish their group-stage run with a perfect record and move on to the Champions League knockout rounds.
