Lookman’s Dramatic Late Goal Takes Atalanta to the Top of Serie A
Atalanta secured a thrilling 2-1 victory over AC Milan on Friday, thanks to a last-minute goal from Ademola Lookman, propelling them to the top of Serie A. This win not only extended their impressive winning streak but also marked a significant moment in the battle for the Italian league's summit. With just three minutes left on the clock, a well-delivered corner from Sead Kolasinac found Lookman, who rose above his marker to head home the winner, sending the home fans into raptures.
The match had started with an early flourish. Atalanta, who had been in exceptional form, took the lead in the 12th minute through former Milan player Charles De Ketelaere. His header from a corner gave the hosts a deserved advantage. However, Milan were quick to respond, and just ten minutes later, Rafael Leão’s cross found Álvaro Morata in the box, who slotted home the equalizer with a clinical finish.

The remainder of the match saw both sides pushing for the winner. Milan came close on a few occasions, but Atalanta’s defense stood firm, while goalkeeper Mike Maignan made an impressive save to deny Atalanta a third goal in stoppage time. However, it was Lookman who would have the final say, his late header securing all three points for Atalanta, taking them to 34 points, two ahead of second-placed Napoli.
This victory was a crucial one for Gian Piero Gasperini’s side, who now find themselves leading the table for the first time this season. Their resilience and attacking prowess have been evident throughout their nine-game winning streak. Atalanta’s rise to the top of Serie A shows just how far the team has come under Gasperini's leadership.
For Milan, the loss was a blow to their hopes of climbing up the standings, as they remain in seventh place with 22 points. Despite creating several chances, they couldn’t break down Atalanta’s defense and were left to rue their missed opportunities.
Meanwhile, Inter Milan, who remain in third place, comfortably defeated Parma 3-1 at home. Inter’s Federico Dimarco, Nicolò Barella, and Marcus Thuram all found the net, while Parma's Matteo Darmian unfortunately scored an own goal to give the visitors a late consolation. Inter’s dominance ensured they remain just three points behind Atalanta, keeping the Serie A title race incredibly tight.
The Serie A season is shaping up to be an exciting one, with Atalanta now leading the charge. As teams like Napoli, Inter, and Milan look to close the gap, every match becomes increasingly crucial in the race for the coveted Scudetto.
