Major Fire at Edison Senior Housing Complex Leaves Two in Critical Condition
A devastating fire at the Inman Grove Senior Housing complex in Edison, New Jersey, has left several people injured and more than 200 residents displaced. The fire, which erupted on the evening of December 3rd, quickly escalated into a multi-alarm emergency, involving firefighters from Edison, Metuchen, and South Brunswick, as well as the Middlesex County Fire Marshal's office. The fire started around 6 p.m. in an apartment within the complex, and it spread rapidly, engulfing multiple floors and severely damaging the building.
Initial reports from authorities indicated that one person had died in the fire, but Mayor Sam Joshi later confirmed that the individual had regained a pulse and was being treated in critical condition. Two other residents were also reported to be in critical condition, and several others were hospitalized due to smoke inhalation. A total of 10 people were taken to local hospitals for treatment, with the majority being elderly residents who were particularly vulnerable due to mobility issues.

The Inman Grove Senior Housing complex, which consists of multiple five-story buildings, has over 100 apartments, but the exact number of units affected is still being assessed. The fire caused significant damage to the C Wing of the building, rendering it uninhabitable, and smoke affected several other areas, including the D Wing. As a result, all residents of the complex were evacuated and moved to temporary shelters. Many were relocated to hotels, with the Edison Township covering the cost for accommodations through its emergency trust fund. In total, 100 hotel rooms were arranged to house the displaced seniors.
In addition to the local fire departments, the Red Cross responded to the scene to assist those affected. The American Red Cross set up a shelter at the Edison Community Center, while the township’s health department worked to coordinate the emergency response efforts. Residents were advised to avoid the area surrounding the complex, which was cordoned off by police.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation, and authorities are working to determine how it started. Meanwhile, Governor Phil Murphy has offered support and assistance to the community during this difficult time.
The fire has shaken the close-knit community, but the swift response from emergency services and local authorities helped mitigate what could have been an even greater tragedy. As the investigation continues, Edison residents are left coping with the aftermath, as many face the uncertainty of being displaced from their homes during the holiday season.
