McLaren Claims Historic Constructors' Title at Abu Dhabi GP 2024
The 2024 F1 season has come to a thrilling close at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, with McLaren making history. Lando Norris secured a fantastic win at the Yas Marina Circuit, not only taking the checkered flag but also ensuring McLaren’s first Constructors' Championship since 1998. This victory was a testament to the team's incredible growth and determination over the course of the season. The win was especially significant for Norris, who expressed immense pride in his team’s performance throughout the year, saying, "It feels incredible, not for myself but for the whole team. They’ve done an amazing job this year to come from where we were at the beginning."
The race was packed with drama from start to finish. Norris’ McLaren teammate, Oscar Piastri, also performed exceptionally well, rounding off a stellar performance by the team. Meanwhile, Ferrari’s Carlos Sainz and Charles Leclerc finished in second and third, putting on a strong challenge but falling short of the ultimate prize. Leclerc, who started from 19th, displayed a remarkable drive, climbing through the pack with finesse to secure a podium finish.

Lewis Hamilton, racing in his final Grand Prix for Mercedes, came in fourth. The Mercedes team had an emotional send-off for their long-time star, with Hamilton leaving the team after a historic partnership. The atmosphere in the paddock was emotional as Hamilton shared special moments with his crew, including heartfelt words to his race engineer, Bono Bonnington, stating, “We dreamed alone; together, we believed.” After the race, the fans in Abu Dhabi were treated to the sight of Hamilton performing donuts in his Mercedes, a fitting farewell to a career that has brought him seven World Championships.
But the biggest story was McLaren’s triumph. It’s been a 26-year wait for the team to reclaim the Constructors' Championship, and the celebrations were wild. McLaren’s CEO, Zak Brown, shared the emotional moment with his team, saying, “What a team effort! Amazing. That was stressful.” Lando Norris and McLaren boss Brown made plans to celebrate in style, joking that they would “get absolutely hammered” that evening. The McLaren garage was filled with emotion as team members cried, congratulated each other, and celebrated their historic achievement.
This victory marks a turning point for McLaren, and it is a testament to their relentless pursuit of excellence. Norris also spoke about his hopes for the future, saying, “Next year is going to be my year too,” setting the stage for an exciting 2025 season where McLaren will aim to continue their success.
In the midst of all the celebrations, the race had its fair share of drama on track. Max Verstappen, despite being the reigning World Champion, struggled with a first-corner collision with Oscar Piastri, which affected his race result. He finished sixth, a disappointing result for the Red Bull driver. Behind him, the race saw strong finishes from Mercedes' George Russell and Alpine’s Pierre Gasly.
As the sun set over the Yas Marina Circuit, McLaren’s triumph was confirmed, and the team’s 2024 season will go down in history as one of the most significant in Formula 1. With their first Constructors' Championship in over two decades, McLaren has proven that hard work and dedication can lead to monumental success. All eyes will now turn to next season, where McLaren will aim to build on this historic achievement and challenge for the drivers' title as well.
