Megan Thee Stallion Seeks Restraining Order Against Tory Lanez for Ongoing Harassment

Megan Thee Stallion, the popular hip-hop artist, has once again found herself in a legal battle with Tory Lanez, the Canadian rapper convicted of shooting her in the feet back in 2020. Despite Lanez currently serving a 10-year prison sentence, Megan is now asking the court to issue a restraining order against him, accusing him of continuing a campaign of harassment from behind bars. The situation has escalated, as Megan alleges that Lanez, whose legal name is Daystar Peterson, is using third parties to further target and torment her through online channels.

In a petition filed in Los Angeles Superior Court on December 17, 2024, Megan, whose real name is Megan Pete, claims that Lanez’s actions are re-traumatizing her, causing repeated harm and emotional distress. The court filing points out that even though Lanez is imprisoned, he has shown no signs of ceasing his harmful behavior. Megan’s legal team asserts that despite his conviction and incarceration, Lanez is still attempting to discredit her and undermine the gravity of the case, including making false claims about evidence such as missing bullet fragments.

A major concern in Megan’s filing is that Lanez’s alleged harassment is being carried out through intermediaries, including bloggers, who continue to spread misinformation and attack Megan’s character. Notably, one of these individuals is Milagro Elizabeth Cooper, a blogger Megan is already suing for harassment. Cooper, who operates under the name Milagro Gramz, is accused of promoting false narratives about Megan’s shooting, even questioning whether Megan was actually injured. Megan claims that Cooper is acting as a “puppet” for Lanez, echoing his baseless allegations and spreading online toxicity.

Megan’s petition also highlights a flaw in the criminal justice system, as it points out that the protective orders issued to curb previous harassment have expired, creating a loophole that allows this harassment to persist. The legal documents cite prison call logs from Lanez, allegedly showing that he is orchestrating these attacks from prison. Despite the court’s previous decision, where Lanez was convicted of three felonies in December 2022—assault with a semi-automatic firearm, possession of an unregistered firearm, and discharging a firearm with gross negligence—his actions appear to have continued unabated.

The legal turmoil between Megan Thee Stallion and Tory Lanez has been a saga that has captivated not just the hip-hop community, but also the wider public. The case has sparked important conversations about issues such as misogynoir, the specific brand of misogyny that Black women experience, and the broader dynamics of abuse, victimhood, and public scrutiny. Megan, who has found great success since the shooting—winning a Grammy and releasing hit singles—testified during the trial that Lanez shot her in the feet in July 2020 after an argument in the Hollywood Hills. She did not immediately reveal Lanez as the shooter, but her courage to speak out has made her a symbol of resilience for many.

As the legal proceedings continue, Megan is scheduled to appear in court again on January 9, 2024, when the judge will review the request for the restraining order. In the meantime, Megan is seeking justice not only in the courts but in the court of public opinion, demanding that those who perpetuate harassment and spread false information about her be held accountable.
