Met Office Issues Rare Red Warning for Storm Darragh – Danger to Life Expected
The UK is bracing for one of the most severe storms this season as Storm Darragh makes its way across the country. The Met Office has issued a rare red wind warning, signaling a "danger to life" from the destructive forces of the storm. This warning, which will be in effect from 03:00 to 11:00 GMT on Saturday, is primarily for the coastal regions of Wales and parts of the Bristol Channel in England. It signifies extremely hazardous conditions, with wind gusts potentially reaching up to 90 mph (144 km/h), which could lead to dangerous flying debris, falling trees, and severe damage to homes and buildings. The impact of these winds could also bring large waves that threaten coastal areas, with possible flooding, power outages, and disruption to transport networks.
The storm is expected to develop on Friday with heavy rain and strengthening winds in the western parts of the UK, gradually intensifying overnight. By Saturday morning, the Met Office predicts that the strongest winds will be focused on the southwestern parts of the country. In addition to the red wind warning, amber warnings for wind and heavy rain are in place, especially for Northern Ireland, Wales, and the western coasts of England. These conditions are expected to bring widespread disruption, including power cuts, large waves, and the risk of injury from flying objects. Motorists are advised to avoid travel in affected areas, particularly on roads that are expected to experience gale-force winds.

Storm Darragh is the fourth named storm of the 2024-2025 season, and it is already causing significant damage. Some regions have already reported fallen trees, disrupted train services, and blocked roads. The storm is expected to bring more damage throughout the day, with the potential for local flooding as up to 60mm of rain could fall in some areas. Parts of Wales, especially Rhondda Cynon Taf, are particularly vulnerable after heavy rains during Storm Bert last month, and more than 30 flood warnings have already been issued by Natural Resources Wales.
Travel disruption is also a significant concern, with several major routes likely to be affected by the high winds. National Highways has warned motorists in the South West and North West to prepare for potential road closures and delays. Key roads like the M5, A30, and M6 could see severe wind impacts, making travel hazardous, especially in rural areas where trees are more likely to fall onto roads.
The situation is being closely monitored, and authorities are urging residents in affected areas to stay indoors and take precautions to protect themselves from the storm's dangerous conditions. With the storm predicted to subside by Saturday evening, the amber and yellow warnings will remain in place until the end of the day, but the risk of damage and disruption will continue to be significant for several hours. Everyone in the affected areas should remain alert and stay updated with the latest weather warnings.
