Midwest WA Swelters as Thermometers Break Amid Intense Heatwave
Western Australia’s Midwest has been gripped by an intense heatwave, with record-breaking temperatures pushing thermometers to their limits. Over the weekend, several towns experienced extreme heat, culminating in Geraldton recording its second-highest December temperature ever at 46.5°C. Meanwhile, other towns like Northampton and Waggrakine reported readings exceeding 50°C on personal devices, highlighting the intensity of this weather event.
Residents in Mullewa, just inland from Geraldton, faced extraordinary heat, with Helen Ansell witnessing her thermometer shatter after recording temperatures near 55°C in direct sunlight. "It was unbearable—you couldn't even stand outside for two minutes," she shared. Many residents sought refuge in shaded areas or community pools, while coastal areas like Geraldton saw fewer beachgoers during the midday heat.

This weather phenomenon, driven by hot air masses from the north and a west coast trough, has caused widespread disruptions. Families resorted to creative indoor activities to escape the heat, with many staying in air-conditioned spaces. Angie Parker, who moved to Geraldton from Perth, described the experience as "like an oven outside," admitting she found the conditions overwhelming compared to her Perth upbringing.
The Bureau of Meteorology emphasized the importance of proper temperature measurement techniques. Dr. Karl Kruszelnicki explained how extreme heat could break thermometers, particularly those left in direct sunlight. Official measurements rely on Stevenson screens, which shield devices from solar radiation to ensure accuracy.
Fortunately, relief is on the horizon. A significant cool change is expected just in time for Christmas, with Perth's forecast dropping from highs of 44°C to a mild 24°C. The cooler temperatures will offer a much-needed reprieve after days of sweltering conditions, marking one of the mildest Christmases in decades for the region.
As the heatwave subsides, residents are reminded to stay vigilant and mindful of the ongoing effects of heat on health and infrastructure. This event underscores the resilience of communities and the necessity for preparedness in the face of extreme weather.
