Millwall's Manager Search Intensifies: Alex Neil Emerges as Strong Contender
Millwall FC is continuing its search for a new head coach following Neil Harris' departure earlier this month. The club is actively exploring various candidates to fill the vacancy at The Den, and Alex Neil has emerged as one of the front-runners for the role. The former Stoke City manager, who was sacked in December 2023, has been in talks with Millwall and is said to have impressed the club’s hierarchy. At 43 years old, Neil boasts extensive Championship experience, having previously managed Norwich, Preston North End, Sunderland, and Stoke City.
Despite Neil’s strong candidacy, Millwall is considering a few other names as well, including Steven Schumacher, who was last in charge at Plymouth Argyle, and Matt Bloomfield of Wycombe Wanderers. Millwall is keen to find a manager who can bring stability to the club, especially after a disappointing season so far, with the Lions sitting 13th in the Championship after 20 matches.

Other notable names that have been linked with the position include Gary O'Neil, who was recently sacked by Wolves. O'Neil was approached by Millwall, but sources suggest he felt it was too soon to return to management following his exit from Molineux. His brief tenure at Wolves ended after a string of poor performances, and although he had some success earlier in his career, the consensus is that he needs more time before taking on another managerial role.
On the other hand, another candidate, Stephen Bradley from Shamrock Rovers, is not currently in the running for the Millwall job. Further discussions are expected over the next few days as Millwall’s board seeks to make an appointment that will help propel the club back into contention. For now, the team’s former assistant manager, David Livermore, will take over as caretaker boss, with Millwall facing a busy schedule, including matches against Blackburn Rovers, Norwich City, and Coventry City over the holiday period.
As the search for a new manager continues, the Millwall faithful are hoping that the right appointment can spark a turnaround in their club’s fortunes. The next few weeks are critical, and the club’s leadership will need to make the right decision to ensure Millwall can build a positive future moving forward.
