Nigeria's Super Eagles Return to CHAN After Six Years with Victory Over Ghana
Nigeria's national football team, the Super Eagles, have made a triumphant return to the African Nations Championship (CHAN) after a six-year absence, thanks to a resounding 3-1 victory over Ghana's Black Galaxies. The win, secured in Uyo on Saturday, was not just about qualification, but also about restoring pride and hope for the team. Head coach Daniel Ogunmodede was visibly pleased with the outcome, calling it a “gift” to Nigerian football fans during the festive season.
The match saw Nigeria's home-based players display clinical attacking football, with Ismaila Sodiq, Nduka Junior, and Isaac Saviour all getting on the scoresheet in the first half. The result ensured that Nigeria would be part of the 2025 CHAN, which will be co-hosted by Tanzania, Kenya, and Uganda. This marks an important milestone for the Super Eagles, as they had not participated in the tournament since 2018, and more importantly, had endured a frustrating series of defeats against their arch-rivals, Ghana, in recent years.

While celebrating the achievement, Coach Ogunmodede was quick to emphasize that the team would not rest on their laurels. "We won’t over-celebrate this achievement," he said, making it clear that the focus now shifts to proper preparation for the tournament in February. Ogunmodede highlighted Nigeria's aim to compete strongly for the trophy in 2025, signaling their ambition to reclaim their place among the continent’s elite football teams.
The Super Eagles' victory against Ghana not only secured their qualification but also brought back a sense of belief and confidence to Nigerian football. The team had faced criticism in recent years, but this win against a tough opponent like Ghana was a statement of intent. Ogunmodede’s words reflected this renewed sense of purpose: "This win was about more than qualifying; it was about restoring pride and belief in our team."
As Nigeria prepares for the upcoming CHAN tournament, expectations are high, and Ogunmodede is determined to lead the Super Eagles to success. The road ahead is not without challenges, but Nigeria’s return to the tournament after a six-year hiatus has reignited hope among fans. The team now has the opportunity to showcase their talent on the continental stage and aim for glory in 2025.
