Nottingham Forest Rise to Second After Thrilling Victory Over Everton
Nottingham Forest’s remarkable rise continues under manager Nuno EspÃrito Santo, as they secured a dominant 2-0 victory over Everton at Goodison Park, moving up to second place in the Premier League. This is a significant achievement for a club that was just above the relegation zone when Nuno took charge 12 months ago. With the win, Forest now sits in the top tier of English football, and talk of a Champions League spot doesn’t seem so far-fetched.
The game saw Forest’s attacking duo of Chris Wood and Morgan Gibbs-White shine once again. Wood’s header from a pinpoint pass by Gibbs-White opened the scoring, while Gibbs-White himself sealed the win with an emphatic finish. This victory marks Forest’s fifth consecutive win, a feat they have not achieved in the Premier League since 1995. It also became a historic result, as Forest became the first team since the 1898/99 season to win league games at both Everton and Liverpool in the same campaign.

Everton had been unbeaten in six league matches at home prior to this encounter, but they were unable to match Forest’s quality and intensity. The Toffees, who had drawn their last three games against tough opponents like Arsenal, Chelsea, and Manchester City, couldn’t break down Forest’s resolute defense. Despite some early promise from new signing Armando Broja and Iliman Ndiaye, Everton’s attack lacked creativity. Even after a potential second yellow card for James Tarkowski in the first half, they failed to build any significant pressure.
The match was effectively decided when a defensive mix-up between Tarkowski and Vitalii Mykolenko allowed Forest to double their lead. Anthony Elanga intercepted a loose pass and set up Wood, who then laid it off for Gibbs-White to strike home. Everton’s goalkeeper Jordan Pickford made a string of brilliant saves to deny further goals, but Forest's dominance could not be denied.
In the second half, despite a substitution from Sean Dyche, which saw Jesper Lindstrøm replace the ineffective Jack Harrison, Everton still couldn’t turn the tide. Forest remained disciplined, and their attacking players continued to look dangerous, with Wood’s involvement in both goals underlining his importance to the team.
This win is a testament to Nuno EspÃrito Santo’s transformation of the squad, from relegation contenders to genuine challengers near the top of the Premier League. With a strong defensive foundation and a potent attack led by the likes of Wood and Gibbs-White, Nottingham Forest are making a real statement in English football this season. As for Everton, they’ll need to regroup quickly, as their lack of creativity in the final third continues to be a concern.
