Oilers Eye Redemption in Stanley Cup Final Rematch with Panthers
The Edmonton Oilers are gearing up for a highly anticipated rematch against the Florida Panthers, marking the first meeting between the two teams since last season’s heartbreaking Game 7 loss in the Stanley Cup Final. The Oilers, who fell 2-1 in that series-deciding game, are aware that while the stakes aren't as high this time, the emotional weight of their recent encounter will linger on. When these two teams take to the ice at Rogers Place on Monday night, the echoes of their intense Finals battle will surely influence the atmosphere, even if it's just a regular-season game.
Edmonton forward Connor Brown acknowledged that the emotions from last season’s loss will still be present. “It’s a regular-season game in the middle of December, so it’s not like it’s a rematch for the Stanley Cup,” Brown said, “But with that being said, it’s going to be on everybody’s minds on both teams. We’re all going to be aware of that elephant in the room.” It’s clear that both teams will bring extra intensity and energy to the game, knowing how close they came to winning the Cup just a few months ago.

The Oilers’ journey since their Finals defeat has been a bit of a rollercoaster. They faced early struggles this season, losing five of their first seven games, but have since found their rhythm. With an 18-10-2 record and a current five-game winning streak, they’ve shown they are back on track. Their recent victories over top teams like the Tampa Bay Lightning, Minnesota Wild, and Vegas Golden Knights have instilled confidence in the group. Leon Draisaitl, one of Edmonton’s star players, expressed optimism about their performance, saying, “We’re starting to find our rhythm a little bit better, and we had good teams coming up and we’re looking to continue that.”
As key players like Draisaitl and captain Connor McDavid continue to climb the NHL scoring ranks, the Oilers are hoping to build on their recent success. Draisaitl’s impressive 45 points in 30 games ranks him fifth in the league, while McDavid’s 41 points in 27 games show he’s still as dangerous as ever. Both players are integral to the team’s success, with McDavid reflecting on the sense of belief the team now has. “We feel like we were doing a lot of good things we weren’t getting rewarded for early on, and it’s nice to see the wins coming in,” McDavid said.
On the other hand, the Panthers (18-11-2) enter this game on the back of a tough road trip. After a strong 6-0-1 run, they’ve now faced back-to-back shutout losses to the Vancouver Canucks and Calgary Flames. Their captain, Aleksander Barkov, was sidelined against Calgary due to illness, but he and goaltender Sergei Bobrovsky are expected to return for the showdown with Edmonton. Despite the recent struggles, Florida forward Anton Lundell is expecting a physical battle. “I think it’s going to be a very hard game,” Lundell stated. “They obviously remember last season and so do we.”
Both teams are now focused on moving forward. The Oilers are embracing the challenge of continuing to improve while keeping their eyes on the ultimate goal—the Stanley Cup. Coach Kris Knoblauch, who helped get the team back on track after a slow start last year, feels confident about their growth. “We’re starting to find our way, and it’s been a good stretch for us,” Knoblauch said. As the season progresses, both the Oilers and Panthers will undoubtedly be eager to prove they have what it takes to make another deep run when the playoffs come around. For now, the rivalry between the two teams is sure to add an extra layer of excitement to this highly anticipated rematch.
