Old Explosion Footage Misleads as Jaipur Tanker Blast Video

Recently, a tragic gas tanker explosion in Jaipur, India, claimed the lives of at least 17 people, with many others critically injured. On December 20, 2024, a collision between an LPG tanker and a truck resulted in a massive explosion that set off a devastating fireball, destroying around 34 vehicles. The incident shocked the community, and the media rushed to cover it, but not all information circulating was accurate.

False reports quickly spread on social media platforms, particularly Instagram, where videos of massive explosions were shared, falsely claiming to show the Jaipur disaster. One video, which went viral with over 12 million views, showed a large explosion followed by thick smoke and screams in the background. The post labeled it as footage of the Jaipur LPG tanker explosion, but an investigation revealed that this video was taken from the 2020 Beirut explosion in Lebanon, not Jaipur.

Similarly, another widely circulated video claimed to show the tanker explosion on a highway in Jaipur. The footage, accompanied by a misleading caption about a truck fire, was actually from an incident that took place in Bologna, Italy, in 2018. In that case, a tanker explosion near Bologna’s airport created a huge fireball and even collapsed part of a flyover. Despite these videos being years old and unrelated to the Jaipur blast, they gained traction online, further complicating the narrative around the tragic event.

The spread of misleading footage is a reminder of the importance of verifying information before sharing it, especially in the age of social media, where false claims can rapidly gain a large audience. Such misinformation not only distorts the public's understanding of the event but also diverts attention from the real disaster and the efforts being made to help the victims.

Local authorities in Jaipur have confirmed the devastating loss of life, with many still in critical condition. The superintendent of Sawai Man Singh Hospital, where the injured are being treated, expressed concern that the death toll could rise further. The cause of the explosion was traced to a truck attempting a U-turn, colliding with the LPG tanker and sparking the catastrophic blast.

This incident highlights the dangers of misinformation in our digital age. While the tragedy in Jaipur has rightly drawn attention to issues surrounding road safety and disaster management, it is essential that the narrative remains grounded in verified information. Amid the grief, it is also important that people focus on supporting the victims, their families, and the healthcare workers working tirelessly to save lives.
