Penn State Triumphs Over Boise State to Secure Orange Bowl Spot
Penn State emerged victorious against Boise State in the 2024 Fiesta Bowl, securing their place in the College Football Playoff semifinals at the Orange Bowl. The Nittany Lions displayed a balanced yet dominating performance, ultimately defeating Boise State 31-14. This win not only maintained Penn State’s perfect 8-0 record in Fiesta Bowl appearances but also highlighted the team’s resilience and tactical prowess.
Running back Nick Singleton provided one of the game’s most electrifying moments with a 58-yard touchdown run late in the fourth quarter, effectively sealing the win for Penn State. Tight end Tyler Warren also shone brightly, recording two touchdowns and breaking Penn State's single-season reception record with his 98th catch, surpassing Allen Robinson's mark from 2013.

Boise State, led by running back Ashton Jeanty, fought valiantly. Jeanty contributed 104 rushing yards, adding to his stellar season total of 2,601 yards—just 27 yards shy of Barry Sanders’ NCAA single-season record. Despite Jeanty’s impressive efforts, Penn State’s defense held firm, limiting Boise State’s scoring opportunities and forcing critical turnovers, including three interceptions by quarterback Maddux Madsen.
Penn State quarterback Drew Allar had a mixed performance, showing flashes of brilliance with key throws, such as a 38-yard touchdown pass to Omari Evans and a perfectly placed 11-yard strike to Warren. However, Allar also faced struggles, including a streak of seven consecutive incompletions. Offensive coordinator Andy Kotelnicki’s decision to stray from the run game raised eyebrows, though the strategy ultimately did not cost the Nittany Lions the game.
Boise State’s kicker Jonah Dalmas missed two crucial field goals, which proved costly in keeping the score close. Despite these setbacks, Boise State displayed resilience and determination, underscoring their impressive journey to the playoffs as a historic first for the program.
With this win, Penn State advances to the Orange Bowl and awaits the winner of the Sugar Bowl clash between Notre Dame and Georgia. As the stakes rise, the Nittany Lions will need to address their offensive inconsistencies and clean up penalties to ensure continued success in their pursuit of a national championship.
