Pete Wicks, the reality TV star known for his role on The Only Way is Essex (TOWIE), is once again at the center of controversy following his unexpected progression to the semi-finals of Strictly Come Dancing . Fans of the show took to social media in droves, voicing their outrage just moments into the live episode, with many threatening to turn off their televisions if Pete advanced any further in the competition.
The backlash has been intense, as viewers argue that Pete, who has consistently found himself at the bottom of the leaderboard, does not possess the necessary dancing talent to warrant his place in the semi-finals. Many are perplexed by the fact that more technically skilled dancers have been eliminated, yet Pete remains. The discontent reached a peak during the semi-final episode aired on December 7, 2024, where some viewers voiced their frustration with the judges, accusing them of showing favoritism toward the celebrity contestant. "I am not here to please everyone," Pete stated. "I’m just a bloke who’s having a go at something." His partner, Jowita Przystal, has been by his side, offering continuous encouragement and expressing her excitement for their upcoming performances.
The semi-final night will feature two contrasting routines for Pete and Jowita: an Argentine Tango to Bittersweet Symphony by The Verve, and a Foxtrot to Beyond The Sea by Bobby Darin. While some critics have pointed out that Pete has yet to perform some of the more difficult dance styles like the jive or Charleston, he remains optimistic about his performances, particularly the Argentine Tango. In an Instagram post, Pete shared that the Argentine Tango is one of his favorite dances, a significant statement considering his limited dance experience.
Although the negative feedback continues to flood in, there are also those who support Pete, acknowledging the show's entertainment value and his effort to learn and grow in a new field. One fan defended Pete's participation, saying, "Strictly is an entertainment show. These two men (Pete and Chris McCausland) came into the show with no dancing experience and are now getting to the semi-finals. They embody what the show is about."
