Port Kennedy Fire Update: Emergency Downgraded, Vigilance Advised
The bushfire affecting Port Kennedy in Perth's southern suburbs has been partially mitigated, with the warning level downgraded to “watch and act.” Firefighters have been conducting backburning operations to manage the blaze, which began around 1:30 PM on December 17, 2024. The situation, however, remains dynamic, and residents in the affected area are urged to stay alert and monitor updates.
The primary zone of concern lies between Bakewell Drive, Ennis Avenue, and Port Kennedy Drive. Approximately 22 hectares have been scorched, with the fire progressing toward Ennis Avenue and Mandurah Road. Emergency services have deployed ground crews and water bombers to battle the flames. Currently, the fire is not yet fully contained or controlled, although the efforts have reduced immediate threats to lives and homes.

Miranda Morrison, a Port Kennedy resident just outside the emergency warning area, shared her experience. From her front yard, she could see flames but noted the winds were pushing the fire away from her property. Despite the temporary reprieve, she and her neighbors remain vigilant, ready to evacuate if necessary.
Road closures, including sections of Port Kennedy Drive, have been implemented for public safety. Authorities are urging motorists to steer clear of the affected zones and drive cautiously if travel is unavoidable.
Residents are advised to stay informed through official channels such as the Department of Fire and Emergency Services (DFES) website, social media, ABC Local Radio, and emergency hotlines. Those in the vicinity of the fire should finalize bushfire plans, close all doors and windows, and prepare to act swiftly if conditions worsen.
