Potential Major Changes on the Horizon for the Rangers, Including Mika Zibanejad's Future
The New York Rangers are facing a crossroads as they struggle to find their form this season, and significant changes could be on the way. While the team’s on-ice issues have been a glaring problem, multiple reports indicate that the organization is contemplating adjustments at several levels. The biggest question now revolves around the future of head coach Peter Laviolette, as the team’s performance has fallen short of expectations, currently sitting at the bottom of the Metropolitan Division. According to the New York Post, some players have “quit on their coach,” and rumors are swirling that Laviolette’s position may be in jeopardy if the team fails to turn things around soon.
In addition to potential coaching changes, GM Chris Drury and the Rangers organization are exploring moves in the trade market to shake up the roster. Elliotte Friedman of Sportsnet mentioned that while the team is considering changes behind the bench, they are also looking for ways to improve the lineup. Interestingly, Zibanejad’s situation has taken an unexpected turn. According to a source close to the Rangers, Zibanejad would be open to waiving his no-movement clause for the right opportunity. While the team has not yet discussed which teams Zibanejad would be willing to move to, this could pave the way for his departure if the Rangers find a trade that aligns with their goals.
Zibanejad’s future with the team is further complicated by recent changes to the Rangers’ power play. In a move that surprised many, head coach Laviolette replaced Zibanejad on the top power-play unit, opting instead for Alexis Lafrenière. Lafrenière has earned a spot on the first unit after consistent performances, but this change has been a clear sign that the Rangers are looking for a spark. Lafrenière will now join Artemi Panarin, Chris Kreider, Vincent Trocheck, and Adam Fox, while Zibanejad, who had previously been a key player on the power play, will now anchor the second unit alongside K’Andre Miller, Reilly Smith, Filip Chytil, and Will Cuylle.
Despite this shift, Zibanejad has taken the demotion in stride. He remains focused on contributing to the success of his current unit, emphasizing that the team’s struggles are not about personal feelings but about finding solutions. The Rangers’ power play has been underperforming, currently ranked 23rd in the NHL, and has failed to convert on any of their last 20 man-advantage opportunities. Zibanejad’s reassignment may be part of the broader strategy to revitalize the team’s special teams.
