Quebec Braces for Freezing Rain and Heavy Rainfall This Weekend

As we approach the end of 2024, Quebec is gearing up for a challenging weather event that will unfold over the weekend. A powerful system from Texas is heading toward the province, bringing a mix of freezing rain, heavy rain, and fluctuating temperatures. This weather phenomenon is expected to have a significant impact across many regions.

The system will make its entrance in southwestern Quebec late Saturday afternoon, with temperatures hovering around the freezing mark. This setup creates the perfect conditions for freezing rain, particularly in areas like Estrie, Montreal, Montérégie, Lanaudière, Laurentides, and Mauricie. As the system progresses, the rising temperatures will likely transition the precipitation into rain.

By Sunday, rainfall is expected to intensify, continuing into Monday. Some areas, including Capitale-Nationale and Mauricie, could see up to 50 mm of rainfall. Regions along the St. Lawrence River, such as metropolitan Montreal, Chaudière-Appalaches, and parts of Estrie and Outaouais, may receive up to 30 mm. The Bas-Saint-Laurent, Gaspésie, and Haute-Côte-Nord regions could experience significant accumulations of freezing rain, though exact figures remain uncertain.

The aftermath of this system brings another twist: snowfall in its wake. However, snow will primarily affect the western and northwestern parts of the province. For central and southern regions, the rain will likely diminish any existing snow cover, leaving behind wet and icy surfaces.

Adding to the challenges, a smog advisory remains in effect due to stagnant air conditions caused by recent high-pressure systems. This poses additional health concerns, particularly for individuals with respiratory issues, and limits outdoor activities.

Quebecers are advised to prepare for slippery roads, potential power outages, and localized flooding. Stay informed with updates from Environment Canada and exercise caution during this unpredictable weather period. While the weather may disrupt plans, staying safe is the top priority as we bid farewell to the year.
