Rasmus Højlund Powers Manchester United to Comeback Victory Over Viktoria Plzen in Europa League
Manchester United secured a vital 2-1 win over Viktoria Plzen in the Europa League, a game that was full of drama and resilience. The match, which took place on Thursday, December 12, 2024, in freezing conditions at the Struncovy Sady Stadion, had all the hallmarks of a challenging European away fixture for United, especially after a costly mistake from goalkeeper André Onana handed Plzen a 1-0 lead early in the second half.
The error came in the 48th minute when Onana attempted to play out from the back but misjudged a pass to Matthijs de Ligt. The ball was intercepted by Plzen’s Matej Vydra, who capitalized on the mistake, slotting the ball into the net to give the hosts a surprise advantage. At that point, United looked shaky, and it seemed as though their unbeaten run in Europe this season was under threat.
However, manager Ruben Amorim made key tactical changes that completely shifted the momentum of the game. Marcus Rashford, who had struggled throughout the first half, was substituted for Rasmus Højlund in the 55th minute. The Danish striker made an immediate impact, scoring the equalizer in the 62nd minute. After a brilliant run from Amad Diallo, Højlund found himself in the right place at the right time, tapping in the ball from close range to level the score at 1-1.

United didn’t stop there, and in the 88th minute, it was Højlund again who delivered the decisive blow. A quick-thinking Bruno Fernandes took a free-kick from outside the box, and with perfect precision, he passed the ball to Højlund, who turned and fired past Plzen goalkeeper Martin Jedlicka to give United the lead. The goal capped a fantastic comeback and ensured United’s first win on the road in Europe since March 2023.
The match was not without its challenges for Manchester United. For much of the game, their attacking play was disjointed, and they struggled to break down Plzen’s defense. In the first half, Bruno Fernandes had the best opportunity for United, but his shot was well saved by Jedlicka. There were moments of brilliance, but they were often followed by poor decision-making in front of goal, leaving them frustrated.
Despite these issues, United showed great resilience. The substitutes, particularly Højlund, played a pivotal role in turning the game around. Amorim’s changes were spot-on, and the speed and intensity picked up in the second half, which was critical in United’s fightback. The win lifted United to seventh place in the Europa League standings, providing them with a real shot at securing a spot in the knockout rounds.
On the flip side, Plzen will be left disappointed, knowing they let a great chance slip away. Their performance was commendable, particularly after Vydra's goal, but ultimately, United’s quality showed through. Plzen’s goalkeeper, Jedlicka, made several crucial saves, but it wasn’t enough to prevent a defeat in front of their home fans.
United captain Bruno Fernandes, reflecting on the game, emphasized that mistakes were part of football but praised the team's reaction to their setback. Despite the occasional lack of precision in the final third, Fernandes noted the importance of grinding out the result.
So, this victory was significant not only for the points it earned but also for the character and depth it showed within the squad. With Højlund’s clinical finishing and the impact of the substitutes, United proved they can adapt and fight back, even when things aren’t going their way. As the Europa League progresses, this performance will give them confidence, knowing that they have the tools to overcome adversity.
