Remembering Ustad Zakir Hussain: The Legacy of a Tabla Maestro
It is with great sadness that we learn of the passing of the legendary tabla maestro, Ustad Zakir Hussain, at the age of 73, in the United States on December 15, 2024. The world of music, both Indian and global, has lost one of its finest artists, whose unparalleled skill on the tabla brought joy and inspiration to millions.
Zakir Hussain’s journey as a tabla virtuoso began at a very young age. Born into a family with deep musical roots, he was the son of the renowned tabla maestro Ustad Alla Rakha Khan. Zakir started his training at the age of seven, quickly showing his prodigious talent. By the age of twelve, he was already performing across India, marking the beginning of a remarkable career that spanned over six decades. His mastery of the tabla transcended the boundaries of traditional Indian classical music, and he soon became a global figure in the world of music.

In the weeks leading up to his death, Zakir had been facing serious health issues, including blood pressure problems and heart-related concerns. He was hospitalized in San Francisco, where he was receiving treatment. His close friend, flautist Rakesh Chaurasia, shared the news of his hospitalization, expressing deep concern over Zakir’s deteriorating health. Unfortunately, despite the best efforts of medical professionals, Ustad Zakir Hussain passed away in the ICU.
Zakir’s passing has left a void in the world of music that will be felt for generations to come. His legacy, however, will live on through his music, his collaborations, and the countless artists he mentored throughout his life. His influence on the tabla, and on music as a whole, is immeasurable.
