Revitalizing Banff: Caribou Street Set for a Major Transformation

Banff’s bustling Caribou Street, a key hub for restaurants and retail, is poised for a significant redevelopment aimed at enhancing its pedestrian experience and modernizing critical infrastructure. This $6.8 million initiative will breathe new life into one of the town’s most vibrant areas, while also addressing century-old water and sewer systems that are long overdue for replacement.

The reconstruction will stretch from Lynx Street to Banff Avenue, integrating features designed to prioritize pedestrian activity. Plans include extending the popular curb-free design of Bear Street, transforming Caribou Street into a unified, pedestrian-friendly plaza. Improvements to crosswalks will ensure shorter distances and increased visibility, creating a safer and more enjoyable experience for locals and tourists alike. At the west end, the intersection with Lynx Street will be realigned to further bolster pedestrian safety.

While the project has sparked debate, its urgency cannot be overstated. Mayor Corrie DiManno emphasized the pressing need to replace the underground water and sewer infrastructure, which has required frequent, temporary repairs over the years. “We’re really on borrowed time with the underground situation on Caribou Street,” she noted. Drawing a parallel to Calgary’s struggles with water main breaks, DiManno underscored the importance of proactive measures to avoid similar crises.

The phased construction approach aims to minimize disruptions to businesses and visitors. Work is slated to begin in the fall of 2025, pause for winter, and resume in the spring of 2026, with a target completion date before the peak summer tourist season. Extensive consultations with Caribou Street’s businesses and property owners are underway to address concerns about disruptions and to refine the project’s execution.

This redevelopment also opens up conversations about public space equity and sidewalk seating, as the town collaborates with businesses and Parks Canada to explore new arrangements. These enhancements promise to redefine the street’s ambiance, making it a centerpiece of Banff’s vibrant community life.

Caribou Street’s transformation reflects Banff’s commitment to blending functionality with charm, ensuring its infrastructure supports the needs of a modern mountain town while preserving its unique character. This project isn’t just about upgrading a street; it’s about enriching the heart of Banff for generations to come.
