
Sainsbury's and Matalan Urgently Recall Popular Belly Button Jewellery Due to Chemical Risk
Recently, Sainsbury's and Matalan have made the decision to recall a popular item, the Beeline Belly Bar, after serious concerns were raised about its potential to cause allergic reactions. The flower-themed belly-button jewellery, which had been sold as a festive stocking filler, has been found to contain dangerously high levels of nickel, posing a significant health risk to consumers. The recall was prompted by warnings from the UK Health and Security Agency (UKHSA), which highlighted the risks associated with prolonged contact with the jewellery, especially when used in piercings.
Nickel is known to be a skin sensitiser, meaning that prolonged exposure to it can lead to severe allergic reactions, such as skin irritation and contact dermatitis. The recall notice specifically warned that wearing the Beeline Belly Bar could result in these reactions, particularly for those with sensitive skin or a history of allergic reactions to metals. The product contains an elevated nickel value, exceeding the legal limits for items that come into direct contact with the skin. The heightened levels of nickel found in the product could cause rashes, redness, and irritation, leading to what is commonly known as "nickel contact dermatitis."

Both Sainsbury's and Matalan acted swiftly to remove the Beeline Belly Bar from their shelves, ensuring that no more customers could purchase the potentially harmful item. The retailers issued public statements, urging customers who had already purchased the jewellery to return it for a full refund. These refunds will be accepted even without a receipt, further emphasizing the companies' commitment to customer safety. Both Sainsbury's and Matalan assured their customers that product safety was their top priority and that they were taking every step possible to ensure that the risk to health was mitigated.
Beeline, the company behind the product, also issued an apology for the oversight, expressing regret for any inconvenience caused. They assured customers that the product was removed from sale as soon as the elevated nickel levels were discovered, emphasizing their dedication to consumer protection. Beeline also provided clear instructions on how customers could return their purchased items, either directly to their stores or via partner retailers.
