Schär's Last-Gasp Strike Denies Liverpool in Thrilling St James' Park Draw
In what was an absolute thriller at St James' Park, Newcastle United snatched a dramatic late equaliser to draw 3-3 with Premier League leaders Liverpool. The game was a perfect illustration of why the Premier League remains one of the most exciting and unpredictable leagues in the world.
The match started at a blistering pace, with both teams showcasing their attacking intent. Newcastle came out all guns blazing, clearly inspired by manager Eddie Howe’s mantra of "intensity is our identity". From the get-go, they were all over Liverpool, testing goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher early on with a sharp save from Sandro Tonali. Anthony Gordon was causing problems on the left flank, looking dangerous with his pace and skill. Liverpool, missing their usual defensive rock in Alisson Becker, looked slightly disjointed at times, particularly with Trent Alexander-Arnold resting on the bench.

However, it was Liverpool’s star man, Mohamed Salah, who would open the scoring. The Egyptian striker, in his trademark style, outwitted Newcastle’s defence with a sublime finish to give Liverpool the lead. His strike was a testament to his incredible form, marking his ninth goal in seven Premier League games and his second of the night. But Salah wasn’t the only one in the spotlight; Newcastle’s Alexander Isak was showing his quality. The Swedish striker scored a brilliant goal to equalise, twisting and turning past Virgil van Dijk before dispatching a curling shot into the top corner. Isak’s movement and finishing were exceptional, and it was clear he was determined to make up for an underwhelming start to the season.
Despite some standout performances from Isak and Gordon, it was Liverpool who went ahead again, this time thanks to a clinical Curtis Jones strike after a brilliant assist from Salah. At 2-1, Liverpool seemed to be in control, but Newcastle were never out of the fight. They continued to press and, with the rain pouring down, they got their reward. A brilliant pass from Bruno Guimarães sent Gordon through on goal, and this time the winger made no mistake, finding the back of the net with a precise shot past Kelleher.
With the score tied at 2-2, the drama was far from over. Liverpool, sensing an opportunity to restore their lead, came close through Cody Gakpo and Darwin Núñez, both of whom narrowly missed the target. But it was a moment of brilliance from Salah again that saw Liverpool go ahead 3-2. A well-timed cross from Alexander-Arnold set Salah up perfectly, and the Egyptian coolly finished to give Liverpool the advantage once more.
However, just as it looked like the points were heading back to Merseyside, Newcastle found one final twist in the tale. A free-kick floated into the box saw Fabian Schär connect with the ball in a scrappy finish, taking full advantage of a rare mistake by Kelleher. Schär’s late strike secured a point for Newcastle, ensuring the game ended all square at 3-3.
In the end, it was a well-earned draw for Newcastle, who showed resilience and quality against a Liverpool side that had fought hard for the win. Liverpool will be disappointed to drop two points, especially after Salah’s heroics, but the result ends their winning streak. For Newcastle, this was a reminder of their potential, and with Isak back in form, they’ll certainly be a force to be reckoned with in the Premier League this season. This game will undoubtedly go down as one of the most entertaining fixtures of the campaign.
