Scotts Valley Tornado Causes Injuries and Significant Damage
On the afternoon of December 14, 2024, a tornado hit Scotts Valley, California, causing widespread damage and leaving several people injured. The tornado struck at around 1:40 PM, catching many by surprise in an area not typically known for such severe weather events. According to the National Weather Service (NWS), video footage and radar data confirmed the occurrence of a tornado, though a full survey to determine its exact strength and classification was still ongoing.
The tornado, categorized as an EF1, created significant destruction, particularly around the Mt. Hermon Drive shopping district. Scotts Valley police reported extensive damage to vehicles, with six cars overturned by the powerful winds. Several buildings were also affected, including a Target and McDonald's, where signs were destroyed by flying debris. Local authorities have since cordoned off roads for safety and to allow repairs, particularly to damaged PG&E power lines and poles. The road closures are expected to last overnight as crews work to restore services.

In addition to the damage, five people were injured during the event. Thankfully, no fatalities were reported, though one person remains in the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries after suffering a punctured lung. Among the injured was a battalion chief from CAL FIRE, whose vehicle was lifted by the winds. Fortunately, the chief was released after being checked in the hospital as a precaution. Four of the five injured individuals have been released after receiving treatment for minor injuries.
This rare tornado in Scotts Valley is a stark reminder of the unpredictable nature of weather in California. The NWS and local authorities are continuing to assess the damage and will provide further updates once a complete survey is completed. While the tornado was intense, the community remains resilient, with many helping to clear debris and repair the damage caused.
As the storm moves out of the area, emergency teams are working tirelessly to ensure the safety of residents. The tornado serves as a reminder of the importance of being prepared for severe weather, even in regions not traditionally affected by tornadoes.
