Sean McDermott Praises Cam Lewis for Game-Changing Play Against Patriots
The Buffalo Bills are no strangers to facing adversity, especially this season, with their defense experiencing both highs and lows. However, in their latest win over the New England Patriots, it was a standout performance from defensive back Cam Lewis that helped secure the victory. Despite being without several key defensive starters, including safeties Damar Hamlin and Taylor Rapp, cornerback Rasul Douglas, linebacker Baylon Spector, and nickel cornerback Taron Johnson for parts of the game, Lewis stepped up in a big way.
The Bills defense has had its share of struggles this season, allowing over 40 points in back-to-back games against the Rams and Lions. The Patriots, although struggling with a 3-11 record, still managed to put up a strong offensive showing, particularly in the first half. But Lewis’s timely interception in the third quarter proved to be a game-changing moment.

With the Bills holding a fragile three-point lead, the Patriots’ offense looked to make a big play. However, Lewis, who had been filling in at safety – a position he wasn’t accustomed to – made his presence felt. Cam intercepted a pass in the end zone from rookie quarterback Drake Maye, securing the ball and shifting the momentum in Buffalo's favor. His first career interception was not just a personal milestone, but a key play that helped the Bills to stay ahead and ultimately win 24-21.
Head coach Sean McDermott couldn’t hide his admiration for Lewis's performance, especially considering the circumstances. “He hadn’t played a lot of safety for us, even in practice,” McDermott said. “With the injuries, he was thrust into the starting role and has really done a nice job.” It’s worth noting that Lewis, who was undrafted in 2020, had previously served as a backup safety and played multiple roles in the secondary, but this was his first time starting in a safety position for Buffalo.
Despite some early mistakes, including a missed tackle on a touchdown run by Patriots’ running back Rhamondre Stevenson, Lewis quickly adjusted and remained focused. “You can’t dwell on the past. You just have to move on,” he said after the game. And move on he did, making a crucial play when the Bills needed it most.
The interception came at a critical point, as it gave Buffalo a chance to regain possession and maintain their lead, which was pivotal in such a close game. In the locker room, Lewis’s teammates, including his former University of Buffalo teammate Ja’Marcus Ingram, were all smiles and excitement for the young defensive back’s big moment. Cornerback Christian Benford joked, “Now that you got your first career interception, you paying for DB dinner now?” Lewis, with a smile, responded, “100 percent, nah. I got two kids man, that’s expensive.”
This moment was a testament to the resilience of the Buffalo defense and the growth of players like Cam Lewis, who have stepped up when the team needed it most. McDermott’s praise for Lewis underscores not just his ability to rise to the occasion, but also the depth and adaptability of the Bills' defense, which has had to overcome significant injuries throughout the season. The play, while symbolic of Lewis’s individual effort, also highlights the collective determination of a team fighting through adversity to stay in the playoff hunt.
