Sixers Triumph Over Celtics in Thrilling Christmas Day Victory
The Philadelphia 76ers delivered a statement performance on Christmas Day, taking down the defending champion Boston Celtics with a 118-114 victory at TD Garden. The win marked a significant moment in the season for the Sixers, as they faced off against one of their toughest rivals while missing several key players. Despite these absences, including key figures like Jared McCain, KJ Martin, Andre Drummond, and Eric Gordon, the Sixers showed incredible resilience and teamwork to secure the win.
Tyrese Maxey was the star of the game, putting up an impressive 33 points, 12 assists, and three steals. His aggressive play and leadership on the court were crucial, particularly in the first half, where he kept the Sixers in control early. Joel Embiid also made a significant impact, contributing 27 points and nine rebounds despite a scary pre-game fall. Caleb Martin, in his first start since late November, was a standout with 23 points, including a career-high seven three-pointers.

The Celtics, led by Jayson Tatum’s 32 points and 15 rebounds, kept the game close, especially in the second half, but the Sixers never lost their composure. Early in the game, the Sixers’ offensive strategy was clear – Maxey, Embiid, and Paul George took most of the shots, with Maxey driving the offense. The team was also strong defensively, forcing the Celtics into turnovers and playing solid team defense despite being outmanned in terms of size.
One of the more impressive aspects of the Sixers’ play was their ability to thrive without Embiid on the floor. Even as the Celtics mounted a 7-0 run to begin the second half, the Sixers maintained their focus. Guerschon Yabusele was particularly effective, contributing 10 points in the first half and continuing his solid play throughout the game. Meanwhile, Maxey's resilience and leadership helped the team weather the storm when the Celtics went on a run of their own late in the game.
Despite some shaky moments late in the fourth quarter, where the Celtics closed the gap to just three points, the Sixers showed their strength. Maxey scored seven straight points to push the lead back to double digits, and even though the Celtics continued to fight, the Sixers held firm. A couple of late free throws from Embiid sealed the win, and the Sixers walked away with a huge road victory.
This win was especially important as it marked the Sixers’ first game with their projected starting lineup from the offseason, showing the potential of this group when fully healthy. With players like Maxey stepping up and Embiid leading the way, the Sixers have shown they can compete with the best, even without all their pieces in place. It was a thrilling victory that left Sixers fans optimistic about what’s to come this season, and they’ll look to build on this momentum as they head into their next game.
