South Africa Beats Pakistan by 11 Runs in 1st T20I: Linde and Miller Lead the Way
In the opening match of the T20I series between South Africa and Pakistan at Durban on December 10, 2024, South Africa emerged victorious by 11 runs, taking a 1-0 lead in the series. Despite a valiant effort from Pakistan, the Proteas managed to hold on to their advantage with a clinical performance.
South Africa set a challenging target of 184 runs, finishing with 183 for 9, thanks to a stunning all-round display from George Linde. Returning to the South African side after a three-year absence, Linde smashed 48 runs off just 24 balls, including three sixes. He also shone with the ball, claiming 4 wickets for 21 runs, almost completing a hat-trick in the penultimate over, which earned him the Player-of-the-Match award. David Miller also played a key role in their score, contributing a blistering 82 off 40 balls.

Pakistan, in their chase, began with a rocky start as Babar Azam was dismissed for a duck. Although Saim Ayub provided some early fireworks with 31 off 15 balls, Pakistan's chase faltered due to sluggish middle overs. Mohammad Rizwan, who faced the first ball for Pakistan, struggled initially, scoring just 36 from his first 44 deliveries. However, he later accelerated to finish with 74 off 62 balls. Despite his late flourish, Pakistan's efforts fell short, and they were restricted to 172 for 8 in their 20 overs.
Shaheen Shah Afridi and Abrar Ahmed made early inroads for Pakistan, removing key South African batsmen. However, Miller's brilliance with the bat ensured that South Africa maintained a strong total, even when they seemed to lose their momentum midway through the innings. Pakistan's bowlers did well to peg back the South African innings, with Shaheen and Abrar taking three wickets each, but Linde and Maphaka’s late hitting turned the tide in South Africa's favor.
When Pakistan began their chase, it was clear that the pressure of the required run rate would weigh heavily. Rizwan and Ayub, though, managed to keep them in the hunt with their quick-fire contributions. With 19 needed from the final over, Rizwan was dismissed off the penultimate ball, sealing Pakistan’s defeat. Despite their best efforts, Pakistan's middle order couldn’t finish the chase, and South Africa took an 11-run victory.
Pakistan now faces a do-or-die situation in the second T20I to stay alive in the series. The match will be crucial for the tourists, who need to address their batting and bowling lapses if they are to challenge South Africa’s strong side. With the series now at 1-0 in favor of South Africa, all eyes will be on the next encounter as Pakistan looks to bounce back and level the series.
