Jordan was preparing for the game, only to find that his Nike Air Jordan 11 sneakers were causing him discomfort. To make matters worse, the NBA had been fining Nike for the bold color scheme of Jordan's shoes, which didn’t align with league regulations. With a new design still in the works and no suitable Air Jordans available, Jordan had no choice but to turn to his opponent, Penny Hardaway, for help.
Hardaway, a star for the Orlando Magic and Nike athlete himself, recounted the memorable moment in a recent interview. He explained how Jordan, who was a longtime fan of Nike and loyal to his Air Jordans, asked to borrow his signature Nike Air Flight 1 sneakers for the game. “He called me ‘Kid’ and said, ‘Give me Kid’s shoes,’” Hardaway recalled. “He rocked them joints, and I was still sitting out there going, ‘This man got my shoes.’ The only thing he did was cut off the number one off the back, but he just kept the shoes.”
