Ubisoft Exec Reveals Half ofAssassin’s Creed ShadowsDev Team Are First-Time Game Builders
Ubisoft’s upcoming Assassin’s Creed Shadows has sparked widespread attention—and concern—following a revealing statement from franchise head Marc-Alexis Coté. Speaking at the 2024 External Development Summit (XDS), Coté disclosed that nearly half of the development team working on Shadows is comprised of individuals building their first game. This candid admission has fueled debates about the game's potential quality and Ubisoft's approach to talent development.
During the keynote and Q&A session, Coté emphasized transparency as a cornerstone of trust within game development. Reflecting on the challenges of building games, he cited a Penny Arcade philosophy: “A game is s–t until it’s good.” This, he explained, is a reality faced by all developers, regardless of experience. For Ubisoft, the pandemic has led to an influx of junior developers, altering the studio's team dynamics. Coté acknowledged that the shift has made mentoring and reassurance key priorities for senior staff.

Ubisoft’s push for inclusivity and innovation has also drawn scrutiny. While some see fresh talent as an opportunity to infuse creativity, others worry about the impact on a franchise known for its high standards. Coté, however, offered a personal anecdote to underscore his confidence: during his first project, Assassin’s Creed Syndicate , he doubted its completion just months before launch, only to see it achieve critical acclaim. “It’s not good until it is,” he reassured, highlighting the iterative nature of game design.
This openness about challenges, while admirable, has left fans with mixed feelings. Optimists believe that mentorship and playtesting can harness the energy of new developers, while skeptics fear that a lack of experience could compromise the final product. Adding to the stakes, Shadows is set for release on February 14, 2025, with no further delays expected.
Ultimately, Assassin’s Creed Shadows stands as a test of whether Ubisoft’s bet on fresh talent can balance creativity with the franchise's storied legacy. Only time will tell if this gamble will pay off—or if it will become a cautionary tale in AAA game development.
