USA Overpowers Latvia to Continue World Juniors Dominance
The United States secured their 10th consecutive victory in World Junior Championship play, defeating Latvia 5-1 in Ottawa. This win cements the Americans’ dominant form across three tournaments and keeps them undefeated against Latvia in Junior history, with a lopsided overall score of 47-9 in six encounters. For Latvia, the game came just 17 hours after their historic shootout win over Canada, leaving the team physically and emotionally drained against the relentless American offense.
Latvia managed a spirited start in the first period, maintaining a defensive structure reminiscent of their approach against Canada. However, Team USA struck early, with Danny Nelson finding the back of the net just 1:58 into the game. Despite the Latvians' efforts to stifle the Americans' creativity, the game turned into a showcase of offensive precision for the United States. Latvia's goaltender, Linards Feldbergs, was heroic once again, making a series of stunning saves, including a spectacular glove stop during a five-on-three power play. However, the sustained pressure was too much.

In the second period, the U.S. broke the game open with three unanswered goals. James Hagens, a standout performer projected as a top NHL Draft pick, orchestrated a brilliant power-play goal with a perfect cross-ice pass to Ryan Leonard. Another highlight came when Zeev Buium capitalized on a well-executed four-on-four play to extend the lead. Nelson scored his second goal late in the period, leaving Latvia with a daunting deficit heading into the third.
Latvia's persistence paid off in the final frame as Davids Livsics finally beat U.S. goalie Hampton Slukynsky at 8:22, igniting the crowd. Slukynsky, making his tournament debut, was otherwise solid, stopping 25 shots and demonstrating his potential. However, Max Plante sealed the game with a two-on-one conversion, restoring the Americans’ four-goal lead.
This win propels the U.S. to a 2-0 record in Group A, while Latvia sits at 1-1. As the defending champions, Team USA’s depth and high-tempo play reaffirm their position as title contenders. Next up, they face Finland, while Latvia looks to regroup against Germany.
