Usyk Triumphs Over Fury in Epic Heavyweight Rematch to Retain World Titles
In a thrilling and closely contested rematch, Oleksandr Usyk demonstrated why he's regarded as one of the best in boxing, overcoming Tyson Fury to retain his unified heavyweight world titles. The fight, which took place at the Kingdom Arena in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, on December 21, 2024, was a spectacle of skill, determination, and heart. Usyk, who had previously handed Fury his first career loss in a split decision seven months earlier, once again showed his superiority in the ring, outpointing the British champion.
Fury, known for his towering frame and unorthodox style, began the fight with a strong showing, particularly in the first half. Using his physical advantages—his six-inch height, eight-inch reach, and significant weight advantage—he was able to land some eye-catching shots on the Ukrainian. However, despite Fury’s power, it was Usyk’s superior technique and work rate that earned him the upper hand. While Fury may have had moments of success, it was Usyk’s clean punches and volume that earned him the nod from all three judges, who scored the fight 116-112 in his favor.

The atmosphere at the Kingdom Arena was electric, with boxing legends such as Roberto Duran, Lennox Lewis, and Prince Naseem Hamed watching ringside. Both fighters entered with their own style, with Fury playfully dressed as Father Christmas to the tune of Mariah Carey's "All I Want For Christmas Is You," while Usyk walked in with a focused demeanor, reciting a prayer in his corner.
As the rounds progressed, Fury appeared to lose some steam, and Usyk found his rhythm, delivering precise punches to the body and head. In the later rounds, particularly the 11th, Usyk displayed his boxing brilliance, landing a beautiful combination that seemed to hurt Fury. The champion applied relentless pressure, knowing that he needed to finish strong. Fury, in contrast, appeared frustrated and was unable to respond in kind as the fight drew to its conclusion.
After the final bell, Usyk was declared the victor, and while Fury left the ring without speaking to the media, his defeat was met with no accusations of robbery. Fury’s only two losses in his illustrious career have come at the hands of Usyk, cementing the Ukrainian’s place as a generational talent in the heavyweight division.
Usyk’s victory not only retained his WBA (Super), WBC, and WBO titles but also extended his undefeated record to 23 professional wins. In his post-fight comments, Usyk showed respect for his opponent, calling Fury a great fighter and acknowledging the significance of their two bouts for his own career. With this victory, Usyk continues to prove himself as one of the best pound-for-pound boxers in the world.
