Washington Commanders Overcome Struggles in First Half to Secure Overtime Victory Against Falcons
The Washington Commanders displayed grit and resilience in their Week 17 showdown against the Atlanta Falcons, overcoming a lackluster first half to secure a thrilling overtime victory. Despite a rocky start, the team came together when it mattered most, clinching a 17-14 win that not only kept their playoff hopes alive but also sent the Falcons into the depths of playoff contention.
Entering the game with an 11-5 record, the Commanders knew the importance of the matchup, especially as they were facing an 8-7 Falcons team that was on the verge of elimination. However, the first half was far from easy for Washington. Coach Dan Quinn described it as a “tale of two halves,” and it was clear that the Commanders were struggling to find their rhythm. With penalties mounting and offensive inconsistencies, they went into halftime trailing 17-7.
It was a tough spot for Washington, but they didn’t fold. Tight end Zach Ertz, who would later be the hero of the game with the winning touchdown in overtime, summed up the frustration: “It just feels like we had no rhythm in the first half... we’re at our best when we’re able to find a little rhythm and play fast.” The team knew they had to clean things up and find their groove if they were to pull off a comeback.

The second half saw a dramatic turnaround, especially on defense. The Falcons, who had rushed for 101 yards in the first half, were held to just 126 yards on the ground for the entire game. A key factor in the shift was the Commanders’ ability to contain the Falcons' top running back, Bijan Robinson. After a strong first half where Robinson amassed 82 yards on 13 carries, Atlanta inexplicably limited his touches, leaving the offense to sputter. This change in approach allowed Washington’s defense to regain control.
Offensively, the Commanders started executing better. Jayden Daniels, their quarterback, became more efficient, and the offense found some flow. With the mistakes of the first half behind them, they played fast and aggressive, keeping the pressure on Atlanta. It was this shift in momentum that allowed the Commanders to eventually tie the game and force overtime.
In the extra period, it was Ertz who sealed the deal, catching the game-winning touchdown and sending the crowd at Northwest Stadium into a frenzy. The win wasn’t pretty, but it was enough to secure Washington’s playoff spot, and their confidence was evident as they celebrated the hard-fought victory.
The win also marked a significant milestone for the Commanders, as they now stand at 11-5, holding the sixth seed in the NFC playoff picture. It’s a far cry from where they were just a couple of weeks ago, when they had failed to win a game against a team with a winning record. Their victory against the Falcons not only kept them on track for the postseason but also knocked Atlanta out of the playoff picture.
Despite the thrilling win, Coach Quinn acknowledged the team's need for improvement, particularly in handling adversity. "We’ve got to learn how to win ugly," Quinn said. "But that’s the sign of a good team — learning how to win even when things aren’t perfect." As the Commanders prepare for the final stretch of the regular season, it’s clear they’ll need to clean up their play if they hope to make a deep run in the playoffs. However, for now, they can savor the moment and focus on what lies ahead.
