So, the study compared a basket of 56 typical items—both branded and own-brand—across major UK supermarkets. Aldi came out as the cheapest, with an average cost of £100.29 for the basket in December. Lidl followed closely, while Sainsbury’s Nectar card users paid £112.13 for the same basket. That’s about £11.84 more per week , which adds up to over £615 a year . And if you don’t use a Nectar card? It’s even worse— £116.70 per basket , pushing the yearly difference to £630.76 .
Now, to be fair, loyalty cards like Nectar do offer perks. But this study highlights a key point: loyalty discounts don’t always make up for higher base prices. Even with those Nectar deals, Sainsbury's still ranks behind Aldi, Lidl, and Tesco (with a Clubcard) in terms of overall affordability. Without a Nectar card, it’s even pricier, placing Sainsbury’s near the bottom, ahead of only Ocado and Waitrose.
