
Attempted Murder at Royal Oldham Hospital: Nurse Stabbed in Shocking Incident
In a tragic and alarming incident at the Royal Oldham Hospital, a nurse in her 50s sustained life-changing injuries after being stabbed on Saturday night. The accused, 37-year-old Rumon Haque from Royton, Greater Manchester, has been charged with attempted murder and possession of a bladed article following the attack. The incident occurred around 11:30 PM in the hospital's acute medical unit, leaving staff and patients deeply shaken.
The victim, identified as Achamma Cherian, was immediately provided with medical attention and continues to receive treatment for her injuries. Greater Manchester Police (GMP) swiftly arrested Haque at the scene. He appeared before Manchester Magistrates' Court dressed in a grey tracksuit, where he confirmed his name and details but did not enter a plea. The case has now been transferred to Manchester Minshull Street Crown Court, where Haque is set to appear next month.

Det Supt Matt Walker of GMP reaffirmed the police's commitment to providing ongoing support to all affected.
Local leaders have also condemned the attack. Health Secretary Wes Streeting took to social media, stating, “Nurses are the backbone of our NHS and should be able to care for patients without fear of violence.” Jim McMahon, MP for Oldham, labeled the incident a “senseless attack,” extending wishes for the nurse’s full recovery.
