Austin Reaves Shines with Career-High 38 Points to Lead Lakers in Thrilling Win Against Nets
The Los Angeles Lakers came out on top in a nail-biting 102-101 victory against the Brooklyn Nets, but it wasn't without its challenges. In a game that was far closer than many anticipated, especially with Anthony Davis out due to plantar fasciitis, Austin Reaves took center stage with a career-high 38 points. His outstanding performance, especially in the fourth quarter, was crucial in securing the win, alongside the leadership of LeBron James. The Lakers, who were without Davis, faced an uphill battle as the Nets remained competitive throughout the game, with former Lakers guard D'Angelo Russell having a chance to win it for Brooklyn with a late three-pointer. However, his attempt fell short, allowing the Lakers to escape with the narrow victory.
From the opening tip, it was clear that this game would not be a cakewalk for the Lakers. LeBron James, who played 35 minutes and posted 29 points, 7 rebounds, and 8 assists, could sense that the energy in the arena wasn’t as high as it should be. After hitting a three-pointer to end the first quarter, he even gestured for the crowd to raise their energy levels. But it wasn’t until the Lakers' struggles became apparent that the fans truly got into the game. Lakers head coach JJ Redick wasn’t pleased with the team’s overall performance, especially defensively, and made sure to voice his frustration on the sideline.

Despite the lackluster effort, the Lakers turned to their stars, with James and Reaves combining for 25 of the team's 30 points in the fourth quarter. Reaves, who had missed a few shots in the final minutes, stepped up when it mattered most, showing his growing confidence as the primary ballhandler. His performance highlighted the shift that has taken place this season, with Reaves taking on a bigger role after D’Angelo Russell was moved to the bench.
Reaves' fourth-quarter surge, including 15 points in the final period, was key in securing the win for the Lakers. Even with the game not being pretty, Reaves, along with James, maintained the mentality that a win is a win, regardless of the margin. “It’s a win in the win column, and that’s all that matters,” Reaves said after the game.
Looking ahead, the Lakers are hoping to get Dorian Finney-Smith and Davis back for their next game against the Clippers, but for now, it was Reaves and James who ensured that the Lakers would head into the weekend with a crucial win.
