Border 2 Fire Near US-Mexico Border Forces Evacuations and Warnings
A major wildfire, the Border 2 Fire, broke out near the U.S.-Mexico border on Thursday, rapidly growing to an alarming 4,250 acres by Friday morning. Initially, the fire began with a blaze on Otay Mountain, visible from miles away. The fire ignited just before 2:30 PM, and by the evening, it had already spread to 600 acres. By 5:00 AM the next day, that number had jumped to 1,000 acres, and by 6:30 AM, it had reached a staggering 4,250 acres. As of the latest updates, firefighters have contained only 10% of the fire, but their efforts are ongoing, and the spread rate has been downgraded from dangerous to moderate.

The fire has prompted evacuation warnings and orders for local residents. In El Cajon, evacuation centers have been set up at the Edwards Cinema parking lot and Southwestern College. Local authorities have also closed roads, including Alta Road, south of Otay Mesa Road, and Otay Lakes Road, from Wueste to Campo Road. Schools in the area are closed, including several from the Chula Vista Elementary School District, as a precautionary measure. The fire continues to burn near the Otay Mountain Truck Trail, an area known for its steep and challenging terrain.
A smoke advisory has been issued for Otay Mesa and surrounding regions, urging residents to stay indoors if possible, especially those with respiratory issues. The flames can be seen at night, casting an eerie glow across the sky, and creating a dangerous situation for both wildlife and nearby communities. Firefighters are working tirelessly to control the blaze, but with the strong winds and dry conditions in the region, the fire's behavior is unpredictable.
The rapid spread of the Border 2 Fire is a reminder of the extreme wildfire risks present in California, particularly during the dry months. With thousands of acres already scorched and evacuation orders in place, local residents are advised to stay vigilant. As the situation evolves, authorities continue to monitor the fire and keep the public informed about safety precautions and evacuations. Residents of the affected areas should heed evacuation orders and follow any additional instructions from fire officials to ensure their safety.
