Brock Anderson Reveals Why He Declined AEW Contract Renewal
Brock Anderson, the talented wrestler who made his debut in AEW in June 2021, recently opened up about why he turned down a contract extension offer from the company. In a candid interview with K & S WrestleFest, Anderson shared his decision to walk away from AEW after two years with the promotion. For those following AEW closely, his departure might seem sudden, but Anderson has clearly been reflecting on his career path and the challenges he faced during his time with the company.
Anderson, who last appeared in AEW during the August 2023 episode of AEW Collision, explained that he came to a realization about his future with AEW around the two-year mark of his contract. He revealed that while AEW had its benefits, particularly during the tough times of the pandemic, he soon understood that it wasn’t the right fit for him long-term. "Hindsight’s 20/20," he said, reflecting on the early days of AEW, which had only just started to grow before the world was hit by the COVID-19 pandemic. As the company navigated its way through the pandemic, Anderson noted that it was a great environment to be in during a difficult time, but he also felt the need for more as AEW began to expand.

For Anderson, one of the biggest issues was the lack of opportunities for repetition in matches. AEW offered limited scheduled dates for talent, which made it harder for wrestlers like Anderson to grow and develop their skills. Despite being surrounded by experienced professionals like Cody Rhodes and working alongside other young wrestlers, Anderson realized that the short, sporadic matches were not enough to help him improve as a wrestler. "After just doing those five-minute Universal (Orlando) matches, you can’t really get better doing that. It’s too short of a time," he explained, acknowledging the gap in experience that a regular, more demanding schedule would provide.
When AEW made an offer to renew his contract, Anderson felt the extension wasn’t substantial enough to meet his needs. While he appreciated the opportunities AEW gave him, he was looking for more guaranteed dates and more chances to improve. As a result, he decided that it was time to part ways, stating that staying with AEW under the same conditions would not have helped him grow in the way he needed to. "Maybe we just don’t do this and maybe we just go our separate ways," he said, concluding that it was the best decision for his future.
This decision also opened doors for Anderson to work more closely with his mentor, C.W. Anderson, which proved to be a pivotal moment in his development. He credited the knowledge he gained in a short amount of time from his mentor as a key factor in his growth, which he felt AEW couldn't provide under the previous terms. Reflecting on his time in AEW, Anderson expressed his gratitude, particularly for the chance to work with some incredible talent, but ultimately, he needed to make a move for his own wrestling career.
It’s clear that Brock Anderson’s decision was driven by a desire to improve, learn, and grow as a professional wrestler. By stepping away from AEW, he’s now charting a path that will hopefully offer more opportunities to work, train, and refine his craft. While AEW gave him valuable experience, Anderson’s future in wrestling seems set to take a new direction, one where repetition and growth are at the forefront.
