Challenges and Setbacks for Ukraine’s 155th Mechanized Brigade
The 155th Mechanized Brigade, one of Ukraine’s newly formed military units equipped with German-made Leopard 2 tanks and French Caesar howitzers, has faced significant setbacks even before engaging in combat. This brigade, intended as a symbol of strength and modern military capability, has struggled with organizational challenges, leadership gaps, and logistical shortcomings, leading to heavy losses during its deployment near Pokrovsk in eastern Ukraine.
The brigade was envisioned as a crucial reinforcement for Ukrainian defenses against a massive Russian offensive. However, its journey has been fraught with problems. Initially formed with over 5,800 troops, the brigade saw approximately 1,700 soldiers go absent without leave during its nine-month training phase in Ukraine, Poland, and France. Even as late as November, nearly 500 personnel were reportedly unaccounted for. Such large-scale desertions highlighted a lack of cohesion and trust within the unit.

Critics, including military analysts and insiders, have pointed to a failure in leadership and planning. Instead of consolidating and replenishing seasoned brigades that have borne the brunt of the war, Ukraine's top military and political leaders chose to create new units. This approach, driven by the need to project an image of resilience and capability to Ukraine's allies, resulted in undertrained recruits being placed in key positions with insufficient equipment, including a glaring lack of drones and counter-drone measures.
When the 155th Mechanized Brigade entered combat outside Pokrovsk, it suffered devastating losses, both in personnel and valuable equipment like tanks. Experts argue that these resources would have been far more effective if integrated into existing, battle-hardened brigades. The fallout from this decision compelled military leaders to reassign the surviving troops and equipment to more experienced units—a step that many believe should have been taken from the beginning.
This ordeal underscores deeper issues within Ukraine’s wartime strategy, including the challenge of balancing political optics with practical military needs. While the creation of new brigades may appear as a show of strength, the real cost—both in human lives and military effectiveness—has been starkly evident in the case of the 155th Mechanized Brigade.
