Colin Cowherd Suggests High-Risk Trade for JJ McCarthy Could Benefit Seattle Seahawks
The Seattle Seahawks are standing at a crossroads as they approach the end of the 2024 season. While Geno Smith has been a steady hand at quarterback, his future with the franchise is uncertain. Smith, despite playing well overall, is facing a few challenges: his age, his interception numbers, and his looming contract situation. As a result, the Seahawks might be contemplating a change at quarterback to ensure the team’s future success.
Colin Cowherd recently made a bold suggestion on his show that could shake up Seattle’s quarterback situation. He proposed that the Seahawks should pursue a high-risk, high-reward trade for Minnesota Vikings quarterback J.J. McCarthy. McCarthy, who was drafted 10th overall, has yet to take a snap in the NFL after suffering a torn ACL in his rookie season. While his injury has sidelined him for the entire year, the Vikings have seen unexpected success with veteran Sam Darnold, who has been playing at a high level and may have cemented his place as the team's future QB.

The potential for McCarthy to be traded is intriguing, especially given the weak quarterback draft class and the Seahawks' position at 18th overall. As Cowherd pointed out, Seattle could make a deal for McCarthy, possibly offering a second and a fourth-round pick, or even a second, fourth, and fifth, which would provide the Vikings with valuable draft picks in exchange for a quarterback that might not have a future with the team.
The risk in acquiring McCarthy lies in his lack of playing time. McCarthy’s college career was impressive, but he only started for two seasons, and his team, led by coach Jim Harbaugh, ran a run-heavy offense. This contrasts with Seattle’s pass-heavy system, which would require McCarthy to adapt quickly to a very different style of play. However, Cowherd also pointed out McCarthy’s upside: his arm strength, accuracy, and mobility are all attractive traits, and if he can quickly adjust to Seattle’s offense, he could be the young, dynamic quarterback the Seahawks need.
In Cowherd’s view, the Seahawks would be making a smart move if they pursued McCarthy. With the quarterback market being relatively thin, they would likely not find a better option through free agency or the draft. McCarthy, despite his injury, remains one of the most promising quarterbacks in the league, and if the Seahawks can acquire him at the right price, it could be a future-altering move for the franchise.
At this point, the Seahawks’ front office has a few options. They could either roll with Geno Smith for another season, giving the team more time to evaluate potential quarterbacks, or they could go for a gamble and try to land McCarthy. If they decide to make the trade, it could mark the beginning of a new chapter for Seattle's offense, one that could set them up for long-term success if the young quarterback pans out.
