Danny Dyer Reflects on Human Traffic Sequel: Will It Ever Happen?
Danny Dyer has recently opened up about the long-anticipated sequel to the iconic 1999 Cardiff-made film Human Traffic . This cult classic, which captured the essence of rave culture in the late '90s, remains a beloved favorite for many fans. Dyer, who played the character Moff, a rebellious policeman's son with a memorable catchphrase, "nice one bruvva!", has addressed the persistent rumors surrounding a potential follow-up.
The original Human Traffic , written and directed by Justin Kerrigan, was not just a film but a snapshot of a pivotal moment in music and youth culture. The story followed a group of friends navigating life during the workweek, only to find freedom and escape on the weekends, where partying became their true form of release. The film's portrayal of this carefree, hedonistic lifestyle struck a chord with many, especially those who lived through the '90s rave scene.

In a recent interview with the Soccer PM podcast, Dyer spoke about the hopes for a sequel, revealing that discussions were taking place before the global pandemic derailed the project. "There was talk of it, but then Covid hit," Dyer shared, adding that the film was initially going to be set in Ibiza with plans for large crowds of 4,000 to 5,000 people. The idea was to explore how rave culture had evolved from its roots in the '90s to a new generation of partygoers, with Dyer noting how the world of raving now collided with today's crowds.
The potential sequel, according to Dyer, would tackle deeper societal issues. "It’s about where did all the love go?" he pondered, reflecting on how today's age of division and hate contrasts sharply with the unity and love that defined the rave culture of yesteryear. "Human Traffic was about love, hedonism, and everyone coming together. And we need a bit of that now," he continued, expressing his desire to revisit the world of Moff and his friends.
Dyer's passion for the project was also evident when he discussed his role in the original film. Reflecting on his portrayal of Moff, Dyer recalled, “I just went f***in’ crackers on it, which I was allowed to do,” referring to his portrayal of a carefree and wild character with a penchant for partying. His candidness about the character’s over-the-top nature highlights the freedom he felt to truly express his Cockney roots on screen.
There were some challenges during the original film’s production, including resistance from distribution companies who wanted a more “moral ending.” However, Dyer dismissed these concerns, saying Human Traffic wasn’t meant to be a serious, moral lesson—it was simply a celebration of youth, freedom, and partying.
In 2019, Human Traffic ’s creator Justin Kerrigan revealed that a script for Human Traffic 2 had already been written, with UK distribution secured. Kerrigan, however, described the sequel as a reaction to the socio-political climate post-Brexit. It would center around unity, with a message about humanity coming together as one race—the human race—highlighting how much the world needs that sense of collective love right now.
For fans who have been waiting for the sequel, Dyer’s words offer a glimmer of hope, but it's clear that timing and circumstances need to align. Whether or not the project comes to fruition, one thing is clear: Human Traffic still holds a special place in the hearts of many, and Dyer, along with Kerrigan, would love to revisit that world if the opportunity ever arises again.
