The Malayalam film industry is in a state of shock as renowned director Shafi remains in critical condition following a severe stroke. The 56-year-old filmmaker, known for his popular comedy films like Kalyanaraman , Pulival Kalyanam , and Two Countries , was admitted to a private hospital in Kochi on January 16. After suffering the stroke, he underwent emergency brain surgery to treat the internal bleeding, but his health remains unstable. Shafi is currently on ventilator support, and doctors continue to monitor his condition closely.

Veteran actor Mammootty, along with several prominent figures from the Malayalam film fraternity, visited the hospital to express their solidarity and support for Shafi. Mammootty, whose recent film Dominic and the Ladies’ Purse has received attention, was seen at the hospital with producers Anto Joseph and Renjith. They joined Shafi's family, friends, and colleagues who have gathered at the hospital, all praying for his swift recovery. Director B Unnikrishnan, a close associate of Shafi, spoke to the media, providing updates on his condition. Unnikrishnan shared that although Shafi’s treatment is ongoing and the best possible care is being provided, his condition remains critical, and there is no significant improvement yet. He emphasized that the medical team is doing everything they can, and the hope for Shafi's recovery continues to drive everyone’s efforts.

Shafi’s career has spanned decades, with his entry into the industry in the mid-1990s as an assistant to director Rajasenan and the Rafi-Mecartin duo. His directorial debut, One Man Show in 2001, marked the beginning of a successful journey in the Malayalam film industry. His ability to direct family-oriented, light-hearted comedies made him a household name, with hits such as Thommanum Makkalum (2005), Mayavi (2007), and Chattambinadu (2009) among his many successes. His collaborations with actors like Dileep have been a key part of his career, delivering several box-office hits.

Shafi’s family background is steeped in the film industry; his elder brother Rafi is part of the famous writing-directing duo Rafi-Mecartin, while his uncle, Siddique, is an accomplished director in his own right. His work has impacted a wide array of audiences, making him a beloved figure in Malayalam cinema. His most recent film, Aanandam Paramanandam (2022), continued his legacy of creating entertaining and engaging films.
