Fire Breaks Out at Manchester City's Etihad Stadium Before Champions League Match
A fire erupted at a merchandise kiosk outside Manchester City's Etihad Stadium just moments before the players were scheduled to arrive for their highly anticipated Champions League game against Brugge. The blaze, which quickly sent thick smoke and large flames into the air, was located near the players' entrance, creating a tense atmosphere as fans gathered outside in anticipation.
Footage captured by onlookers showed the intense flames coming from the kiosk, which was selling club merchandise. Among the scheduled events that were also affected was the public appearance of new City signings—Omar Marmoush, Abdukodir Khusanov, and Vitor Reis. The fire was promptly tackled by local fire crews, who responded quickly to the scene. Using breathing apparatus, the firefighters utilized two hose reels to bring the fire under control. Despite the swift action, the lingering smell of smoke remained in the air for some time, adding to the sense of unease for the waiting supporters. Thankfully, there were no reported injuries from the incident.
The Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service confirmed that the fire was swiftly extinguished, with crews working to ensure there were no remaining hotspots in the area. To guarantee the safety of everyone present, security staff cordoned off the area, preventing fans from getting too close to the affected area.
In response to the incident, Manchester City issued a statement explaining that the planned events for the evening, including the first-team arrival and a welcome event for new players, were canceled. However, they assured supporters that the game would go ahead as scheduled, with no delays to the 8 pm kick-off. UEFA also confirmed that there would be no disruption to the match, emphasizing that the Champions League tie would continue as planned.
For City, the stakes were high. The defending champions were looking to secure a crucial victory in their group stage as they fought to claim a place in the round of 16. With the fire causing a disruption, the team’s focus would now need to shift to securing their spot in the playoffs despite the unusual start to their evening.
