Florida State Men's Tennis Falls 6-1 to No. 6 Arizona in Season Opener
In a highly anticipated showdown, the No. 9 Florida State men's tennis team faced a tough challenge against No. 6 Arizona on January 18, 2025. The match, which took place in Tallahassee, saw the Seminoles suffer their first defeat of the season, losing 6-1 to the Wildcats.
The day started off strong for Florida State with exciting doubles action. Jamie Connel and Jan Sebesta quickly made their mark, securing a dominant 6-1 win in their first doubles match on Court 3. On the other two courts, the competition was much closer. Erik Schiessl and Joshua Dous-Karpenschif managed to win a tight contest, finishing their match 7-5 and clinching the doubles point for the Seminoles. The match between Alex Bulte and Youcef Rihane, however, remained unfinished, with the score tied at 6-6 in a thrilling tiebreaker.

As the singles play began, Florida State looked to capitalize on their strong start. They held early leads in the first sets across Courts 2-5, but Arizona demonstrated their strength and resilience, coming back to win all five of those opening sets. The Wildcats dominated the singles competition, winning four consecutive matches to clinch the overall victory.
In one of the more exciting moments of the match, Youcef Rihane pushed his Arizona opponent to a third-set super tiebreaker on Court 4. Rihane, who fought hard throughout, ultimately fell short, losing 10-8 in the tiebreaker.
The Seminoles also faced challenges with injuries before the singles play, resulting in two scratches in their lineup. Despite these setbacks, Florida State battled hard throughout the contest but couldn't overcome the depth and strength of Arizona's squad.
Looking ahead, Florida State will shift their focus to the annual ITA Kickoff Weekend, where they will host No. 15 South Carolina, No. 16 San Diego, and UNC-Wilmington. This tournament will provide an opportunity to qualify for the prestigious 2025 ITA National Team Indoor Championship in Texas. The Seminoles will face UNC-Wilmington at 5 p.m. on Friday, January 19, with the tournament continuing into the weekend.
Despite this early loss, the Seminoles have plenty of opportunities ahead to bounce back and show their resilience. With their eyes set on the upcoming tournament and the rest of the season, Florida State will look to build on the experience gained from their tough match against Arizona.
