Heavy Rain Sparks Flood Warnings Across Devon and Somerset
The Environment Agency has issued multiple flood warnings for Devon and Somerset, following a prolonged period of heavy rainfall that has impacted roads, rivers, and communities. Residents in these areas are being urged to remain vigilant and take precautions as floodwaters rise and further rainfall is expected.
In Devon, significant disruptions have been reported, with roads like the A377 near Crediton and Station Road in Newton St Cyres rendered impassable due to flooding from the River Creedy. By Sunday afternoon, some affected roads reopened, but not before vehicles were abandoned in the floodwaters. Rivers across the county, including the Avon, Taw, Torridge, and Lew, are being closely monitored. The Environment Agency continues to update its warnings as the situation evolves.

Similarly, Somerset faces its own challenges. A "red act now" flood alert was issued, with rivers like the Brue, Tone, and Parrett nearing or exceeding their banks. Areas around Glastonbury and Bridgwater are particularly affected, with overtopping rivers threatening low-lying properties, roads, and farmland. Heavy rainfall has already led to the activation of flood defences and reservoir overflow systems, particularly at Currymoor.
The Met Office has extended its yellow weather warning for rain until Monday morning, highlighting the potential for transport disruptions, localized surface flooding, and treacherous conditions. Meteorologists have cautioned residents not to underestimate the risks associated with fast-flowing or deep floodwaters. The abrupt change from milder conditions back to colder weather early next week will bring further challenges to the region.
Local authorities have advised against walking, cycling, or driving through flooded areas, emphasizing the unpredictable nature of these conditions. Motorists are encouraged to seek alternative routes and stay informed via official channels. For many residents, the flooding has already reached unprecedented levels, with some describing river tides as the highest they’ve ever seen.
