Henry Patten's Remarkable Australian Open Journey Fueled by Friendship and Reindeer Stew
Henry Patten, the British tennis sensation, has stunned the world by making it to the doubles final of the 2025 Australian Open alongside his Finnish partner, Harri Heliovaara. This achievement comes on the heels of their historic win at Wimbledon, a feat that has propelled both players into the limelight. Despite facing stiff competition, including a nail-biting semifinal against the formidable German duo of Kevin Krawietz and Tim Pütz, Patten and Heliovaara have proven themselves to be a force to be reckoned with.
The duo’s journey to the final has been marked not only by their stellar performances on court but also by the special bond they’ve forged off it. According to Heliovaara, one of the key moments in their partnership came when they spent time together in Helsinki at the end of last season. It was during this trip that Heliovaara introduced Patten to a traditional Finnish dish – reindeer stew. Heliovaara, proud of his culinary skills, joked that it was “perfectly made,” and Patten, enjoying the experience, shared how the meal helped bring them closer as friends. This shared moment of camaraderie appears to have translated well into their tennis, as their connection on and off the court has been undeniable. “We really get along, and that makes a huge difference in the big moments,” Heliovaara remarked.

Their partnership, which began in April 2024, has been nothing short of extraordinary. In just their first tournament together, they clinched their first ATP title in Marrakesh. Their breakthrough moment came soon after when they won the prestigious Wimbledon title as unseeded players, shocking the tennis world. Now, Patten and Heliovaara are on the verge of another major title, having battled their way to the Australian Open final.
Reflecting on their progress, Patten, who will now break into the top 10 of the doubles rankings, is excited about their continued success. He credits their ability to manage high-pressure situations, citing their experience in the Wimbledon final, which was full of tense moments. “Having been through such a close match at Wimbledon, we now know we can handle the nerves and deliver when it matters most,” Patten said ahead of the Australian Open final against Italian duo Simone Bolelli and Andrea Vavassori.
Though only 28, Patten’s rise has been meteoric. He was once ranked as low as 69th in the doubles rankings but has climbed to 13th with his Australian Open run. With a top 10 finish now guaranteed, Patten is eager to solidify his place among the best in the sport. His rapid ascent has sparked interest in the British doubles scene, alongside veterans like Jamie Murray, Neal Skupski, and Joe Salisbury. “I’m fortunate to have had incredible role models in the British doubles players, and now I’m learning from Harri, who has so much experience,” Patten shared.
As Patten and Heliovaara prepare for their final match, their bond, strengthened over meals and shared moments, might just be the secret ingredient they need to claim another major victory.
