How Epic Games Boosted Hell Let Loose's Player Base with a Free Giveaway
Recently, the multiplayer World War 2 first-person shooter, Hell Let Loose , experienced a massive surge in its player count, thanks to a free giveaway on the Epic Games Store. Released in 2021, this game, known for its intense 100-player battles and realistic tactical gameplay, had been struggling to maintain a strong player base. However, after being offered for free from January 2 to January 5 as part of Epic Games’ mystery giveaway, the game saw a remarkable spike in players, even across different platforms like Steam.
Before the giveaway, Hell Let Loose had been seeing a steady, but relatively low number of concurrent players, barely reaching 10,000 players at its peak. Fast forward to January 5, and the game reached its all-time high on Steam, with 20,388 concurrent players. This was just one of the platforms benefiting from the giveaway, as the total peak across all platforms exceeded 140,000 players, as confirmed by the developer, Team17, on X.

The unexpected popularity surge has been attributed to the power of "friendship." Many gamers who received the game for free on Epic Games Store likely influenced their friends to jump back into the game. Multiplayer experiences often thrive on social connections, and with Hell Let Loose being free for a limited time, players who may have drifted away returned to re-experience the game alongside their friends. This helped breathe new life into a game that had, at times, been overshadowed by other titles in the market.
Interestingly, the game's increased popularity on Steam is particularly striking, as Hell Let Loose wasn't free on that platform. Instead, it was offered at a discounted price of $35.99, down 40% from its regular price of $59.99. Despite this, many Steam users who prefer keeping all their games in one place likely took the opportunity to purchase the game, thus boosting the Steam player count.
While the game’s growth is undeniably impressive, it hasn’t come without its hiccups. The influx of new players has led to increased queue times and occasional server issues, a testament to just how quickly the player base grew. Nevertheless, this event showcases the powerful role that free giveaways can play in boosting a game's popularity, especially when it has a loyal community of players who are eager to share the experience with others.
This resurgence has helped Hell Let Loose gain recognition and attention it might not have received otherwise. It also highlights the success of Epic Games’ giveaway strategy, proving that even older titles can find new life and enjoy a boost in player engagement when presented with the right opportunity.
